Damascus-SANA

Dr. Muhammad al-Asiri, head of the Syrian Astronomical Society and director of the Syrian Astronomical Observatory, considered that the discharge left by the earthquake that struck Syria at dawn last Monday was the wind of the Arabian plate, and actually protected all the faults on the plate from another devastating earthquake.

Al-Asiri indicated in an interview with SANA that the earthquake happened and ended, and it is unlikely that another earthquake of the same strength will recur, pointing out that the coming period will witness the stability of the plate after the completion of weak aftershocks, and that there is a large energy that was emptied in the form of parts that protected the region from an earthquake. Greater than 8 on the Richter scale.

And about the possibility of predicting the place and time of the earthquake, the researcher Al-Assari indicated that predicting an earthquake is unscientific, and until now we rely on indicators that precede or follow the earthquake, which do not give an opportunity until a few seconds before its occurrence, but there are historical studies that statistically indicate the presence of an earthquake every period Time is calculated in hundreds of years, and its date has come in this period.

And Dr. Al-Assiri stated that society circulated the idea of a tsunami occurring, which is unlikely in our region for the reason that it needs a devastating earthquake in the heart of the sea that exceeds 8 degrees on the Richter scale, in addition to the fact that the Mediterranean Sea is a semi-closed and small sea and therefore does not allow the formation of high tsunami waves, and this It is unlikely, according to what scientists see.

And about the natural aftershocks that occurred in separate places of the Syrian, Lebanese and Palestinian geography, especially in the Dead Sea Fault, which worried the world, Al-Asiri said: They are completely natural, especially since they spread over the same plate, and this protects the region from another devastating earthquake, especially in this fault. In other words, the magnitude of the earthquake that occurred on the sixth of February completely protected the region from other expected earthquakes.

Regarding what is reported that the dams built in Turkey were one of the causes of the earthquake, Al-Asiri explained that Turkey is considered one of the countries that built the most dams, which deprived countries like Syria and Iraq of their natural right to these waters, indicating that from a scientific point of view, the water that these dams contain is not It is a cause of the earthquake, but rather a factor influencing the intensity of the earthquake, pointing out that the weakness of the crust in the places of dams warns of real concern if it affects those dams and causes cracks in them, which threatens villages and cities in Syria and Iraq with drowning under water.

As for making predictions about other earthquakes, Al-Asiri stressed that this talk is not scientific and not accurate, but rather it is a kind of astrology that science, reason and logic reject, indicating that there is no effect of the celestial bodies, except for the sun and the moon on the earth, neither in terms of earthquakes nor by knowing the future, nor the situation This astrology is called falsehood, calling for the need to stay away and not believe the rumors, and what is covered by social networking sites.

Regarding the possibility of a man-made earthquake, the head of the Syrian Astronomical Society saw that the earthquake could not be man-made, given that no country until today can possess this destructive energy, and detonate it at one point at this depth, in addition to that there is no exceptional astronomical case for objects. The heavenly bodies may have contributed to this earthquake, indicating that the occurrence of this earthquake is normal in an area where such earthquakes can occur, and that the number of aftershocks is an indication of the extent of the energy that was trapped under that crust.

It is noteworthy that Dr. Muhammad holds a Ph.D. in astrophysics and a master’s degree in laser science from the University of Damascus. He is a researcher in astronomy, space, physics and seismology culture, as he presented a lot of readings and applied studies on that and about what happened in terms of earthquakes and aftershocks.
