The Minister of Communications and Technology, Eng. Iyad Al-Khatib, was briefed on the damage to the communications building in Lattakia and the 8 March and Tishreen centers. He also inspected the Jableh telephone and post office, and visited the sites where the workshops are operating to lay ground copper cables and repair the damage caused by the earthquake.
Minister Al-Khatib said in a statement to reporters that he met with the concerned directors to develop a quick emergency action plan to restore the networks in the affected areas, as the workshops operate around the clock.
And Eng. Al-Khatib indicated that the value of the damage suffered by the telecommunications sector as a result of the earthquake is estimated at two billion Syrian pounds, as it included the networks in Jableh and the surrounding areas, and it was directed to provide immediate assistance of the necessary materials such as various types of cables to the headquarters in Jableh, and to provide support for workshops and cadres from Damascus and Tartous governorates.
As for cellular communications companies, the Minister of Communications indicated that work is underway to restore 9 Syriatel stations that were out of service, while providing them with additional quantities of diesel as a result of the current situation, in addition to securing a number of technical requirements in the Directorate, especially financial funds.
The director of the Syrian Telecom Company, Eng. Saif al-Din Hassan, pointed out that the Lattakia Telecom branch was supplied with heavy machinery (excavators, basket cranes and delivery workers) from other governorates, and a study of postponing the payment of telephone bills to relieve citizens in the affected areas.
Regarding the damages that affected the postal sector, the Director of the Syrian Postal Corporation, Eng. Hayan Maqsoud, explained that it was minor and limited to some offices, such as the Blue Beach, the southern sand and Ain al-Sharqiya, and confirmed that the Postal Corporation cadres were placed at the disposal of the governorate.
