The battle for the way to work
: Millions of Israelis make their way from home to work every morning, with the majority using a private car and a minority using public transportation.
In light of the ongoing discussion about the importance of public transportation, its situation in Israel and the prioritization of the special lanes on the roads, we at "Israel Today", in cooperation with the "15 Minutes" association of public transportation consumers in Israel, decided to speed up the inspection of the area.
For the purpose of the test, we held a small competition between a female passenger on public transportation and a private car owner who left the center of Netanya during rush hour on a weekday towards the "Israel Hayom" network in Tel Aviv.
We chose the route due to the fact that on the coastal road is one of the controversial public transportation routes, where the Minister of Transportation Miri Regev decided to stop enforcing the route.
The result test was interesting and revealed some of the failures of transportation planning in the State of Israel.
While the private car was able to overtake in a relatively short time (this is without calculating the time required to find parking in Tel Aviv) he waited longer in traffic.
While the passenger was dozing on the bus, the driver of the private car had to deal with the long traffic jam at the entrance to Gush Dan.
The main delay experienced by the passenger in public transportation was traveling mainly from multiple stations in the city of Netanya itself, as well as heavy traffic within the city due to the lack of a public transportation route within Netanya itself.
The experiment demonstrated how a public transportation route can help the passenger during busy hours in places where it exists, such as on the coastal road, and cause significant delays in places where it is missing, such as in downtown Netanya.
