The specimens of the species also known as the overa weasel were moved along the Reconquista River, in Ituzaingó.

In Ituzaingó, once again, they took another step forward in regards to the

care and conservation of wildlife

.

It is that a few days ago, a group of workers from the Commune of that party in the western zone of Greater Buenos Aires

transferred and released almost a dozen weasels in a reserve

that were in a situation of potential danger.

In this sense, part of the team of the Undersecretary of Environment and Sustainable Development and members of the local Zoonosis Directorate were in charge of carrying out "the translocation of eight specimens of weasel overas, Didelphis albiventris" in

the

Río

Reconquista Urban Nature Reserve

, located in the large property located on Avenida Martín Fierro and the Camino del Buen Ayre highway, in the town of Villa Udaondo.

According to reports from the Commune, they are their

own native specimens

, born in the district, and were

transported from an establishment near the

local Reserve "

because they were in a situation of potential danger

, due to what is called urban fauna conflict";

situation that

prevented guaranteeing their safety and well-being

.

For this reason, it was necessary and imperative to move them to the wild and end up establishing the aforementioned green space as their new home.

Transfer.

Because they were in potential danger, the animals were taken from an establishment near the reserve to that green space.

Overa weasels -or opossums-

are nocturnal marsupials

that are part of the urban wildlife and are adapted to arboreal life.

During the day they rest

in the holes of the trees or in their burrows and

at night they go out to look for their food

.

They have a varied menu:

rodents, insects and fruits

, which is why

they are considered pest controllers and seed dispersers

;

in addition to fulfilling a fundamental role in the balance of the ecosystem.

Although

they are not aggressive animals and do not represent a danger to domestic fauna

-such as dogs or cats-

they are not pets

since, like most wild animals, they are potential carriers of diseases that can be transmitted to humans.

After the release of the weasels, from the

Municipality of Ituzaingó they came out to request

that, in the event of any

improper action to the detriment of this species

, the residents of the district

contact the

relevant authorities to be able to intervene in any eventual circumstance.

Trees.

Weasels go out in search of their food at night.

By day, they rest in the trees.

"They are wild animals, so

they are protected by the Wild Fauna Law No. 22421 that prohibits their capture, sale or domestication

. In case of observing an enclosed or injured specimen, the neighbors can

contact the Undersecretary of Environment and Sustainable Development from Monday to Friday from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. at

(telephone number)

5068-9308

," they noted.

Habitat.

Overa weasels are part of the urban wildlife.

They are not aggressive and are considered pest controllers.

Before, a hawk

In addition to the release of the eight weasels, a few days ago the Commune also carried out the

recovery and subsequent return to nature of a mixed hawk

.

Together with the

Pecho Colorado Bird Observers Club

, the local Environment area managed to free a pigeon that had been found in very poor condition in the garden of the house of Rosa Paladino, a neighbor of the district, who reported the discovery .

Hawk.

A species of this bird of prey was found by a neighbor in her garden.

It was badly injured in its legs and wings.

"He was in the yard,

very badly injured in one of his legs and in his wings

, something that made it difficult for him to get to his daily food," says the woman, who even feared for the life of the bird of prey since her pets -some dogs- They threatened to attack him.

Finally,

after an extensive recovery, which lasted almost nine months

and consisted of three stages,

the animal once again spread its wings and took flight on the same property where the weasels found their new home

.
