Opinion The third intifada is already here Israel today

This is a challenge of the collapse of a strategic order, which requires much more than actions such as demolishing terrorist houses, deportation measures and dealing with incitement in networks. A strategy is needed to repair the cracks

Israel experienced another deadly attack in Jerusalem, but despite the continuing reminders of the Palestinian violence, it continues to firmly deny what has been written in huge letters on the wall for a year and a half: a third intifada!

Although the current intifada is not really similar to the last one that broke out in September 2000, nor to its predecessor in late 1987. It does not have the familiar component of a broad popular outbreak and friction between the IDF and the civilian population, which is characteristic of uprisings that went through their first phase. But it does have the element of the second wave that accompanies each one Of them, that is, severe terrorism against Israeli citizens, and above all lies in it the significant component that determines whether this is an intifada or another wave of terrorism.

What turns a "terrorist wave" of the common type into an intifada (in Arabic, abdication) is the element of its challenge to the existing strategic order.

In the current context, this is an order that was designed by Israel in the last decade and a half and earned it one of the longest periods of security peace that it has known.

It is based on the "economic peace" model, in other words - on the ability to convert economics into ideology.

This is not a new patent.

The state contract formulated it already at the end of the 19th century, and almost all the leaders of Zionism followed it with the concept that Zionism would redeem the East with the power of its modernization.

This concept has been translated into a strategy in recent years thanks to the economic status gained by Israel and its technological strength.

In this way, it could offer its Arab-Palestinian neighbors (in the Yosh, in Israel itself, in East Jerusalem and in Gaza) a quality of life in exchange for softening the ideological visions and political activism.

But the events of the last year and a half, since the May 2021 Wall Watcher, show cracks in this strategy.

The manifestation of this is the violence that broke out and was common to all parts of the Palestinian system: from the Westerners of Israel in the mixed cities, through the anarchist Bedouins of the Negev, to the Palestinians of the Nablus and Jenin regions, to the Islamic Jihad of Gaza and to the youth of East Jerusalem.

Each in turn expressed their distaste for "economic peace," seeking to challenge this strategy and return the region to the old identity politics of the Middle East corresponding to both national and religious conflicts.

In this way, in the last year and a half, all parts of the Palestinian scene were mixed up, the boundaries between them were blurred and all types of violence and its definitions, the nationalist and the criminal, were woven together into a third intifada.

But the Israeli consciousness refuses to see the overall picture.

On the contrary, it prefers to frame the events in narrow definitions such as "waves of terror" and immerse itself in a world of tactical solutions, while this is a challenge of a completely different magnitude, greater than the dimensions of a minister or a one-off operation in Jerusalem.

This is a challenge of the collapse of a strategic order, which requires much more than actions such as demolishing terrorist houses, deportation measures and dealing with incitement in networks.

These can have a certain effect, but without an orderly strategic idea of how Israel can repair the cracks in the (economic) protective wall it has cultivated in recent years, we will not be freed from the operative embarrassment that characterizes us in the face of the lack of success in dealing with terrorism, and we will surely step into a further escalation of the situation.
