Why 'Hogwarts Legacy' is the best Harry Potter video game?

2023-02-13T10:42:58.574Z

The adaptation of the most famous magical world of the last decades becomes one of the games of the year

First things first: it doesn't make sense for such a game to exist.

It makes no sense that, 26 years after the publication of the first book, 22 years after the first film and after fifteen video game adaptations that were forgettable at best, Warner Bros. has bet so heavily on a game based on in the world of Harry Potter.

And, given the background, it is unlikely that things turned out so well.

But

Hogwarts Legacy

exists and it is, simply put, the total experience that any

Harry Potter fan

would like to get lost

Let's go by parts.

Narratively, the game is a success: set about a hundred years before the main saga, the story, nestled within the framework of the Goblin Rebellion and revolving around a specific type of Ancient Magic, does not detract from the originals.

From the books, he knows how to mix the school routine and the main plot (which, as always, affects a darker side of the magical world) and, from the movies, the intelligent use of school ellipses and the seasons of the year. .

The sound sections (an orchestration worthy of mention, a wonderful dubbing) and aesthetics deserve the highest praise.

The combats are deep, well armed and vibrant.

Graphically it's not the best on the market, but it should be remembered that it will be released for all platforms, not just the most powerful ones.

Everything looks and breathes the pure

essence of Harry Potter

.

Fidelity to the magical world is total.

The classes, the houses within the school, the plots that unite our character (a student who enters the wizarding school directly in fifth grade) with her gradual friends.

The design of the castle deserves a full stop: everything feels alive, amazing, in every corner (and there are hundreds, the castle is huge) a mystery or a danger awaits us.

There's no quidditch, okay, but you can't have everything in this life.

The game can be attributed, perhaps, two failures.

On the one hand, the complexity of a proposal that fully embraces its RPG nature: the list of clothes, objects, potions, ingredients, and improvements to our character make Hogwarts

Legacy

a game with remarkable depth, which can throw off fans. less experienced players.

On the other hand, its open world, beautiful and dangerous, but in which certain secondary tasks are repeated mechanically.

A world like this no longer holds up after the advances in exploration design brought about by

The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild

(2017) and

Elden Ring

(2022), but of course, this game began to be made eight years ago, when those two meteorites had not fallen on Earth.

Yes indeed,

Hogwarts Legacy

has a nuance in its world that tips the scales in its favor: flight.

With a broom or with an animal, the sensation of aerial freedom (once we reach it) is enormous and the flight feels like a very free and full activity.

It is a delight to fly through the enormous surroundings of Hogwarts, to approach one of the towns that surround the castle at night from the sky or to touch the water with our feet at full speed.

A match from 'Hogwarts Legacy'.

Little more need be.

Steeped in the world created by JK Rowling, with a bunch of very well drawn characters, with endless care for the creatures and places of the magical world,

Hogwarts Legacy

is full of all kinds of details that not only certify that the game is well done, but that such a complex and concrete world can be satisfactorily transferred to the interactive medium.

The game is in the media spotlight for another reason.

And it is that, despite being one of the most anticipated games in recent years, it has become, paradoxically and as a result of the accusations against JK Rowling of transphobia, in one of the games that have most openly suffered a boycott of... always .

Some Anglo-Saxon media and social networks have been filled these weeks with statements against the game, the franchise and the author, and many have made it explicit that, if the game is bought, movements against transgender people are actually directly encouraged.

Especially from the Anglo-Saxon sphere, media outlets or

streamers

who covered the game have been virulently attacked.

That aspect will be a lot to talk about in the coming days and weeks as well, although you don't need to visit the Hall of Prophecies to know that the boycott will be a failure.

In the end, as well summed up by the famous

streamer

Alexelcapo, "No one is going to steal the experience of playing this game (...) regardless of the controversy or how transphobic JK Rowling is."

And they are not going to steal it for a very specific reason: "I owe it to my 11-year-old self who read the book."

The game will sell millions (if not tens of millions) of copies because that phrase from the

streamer

it crystallizes the majority attitude around the world, whether we like it or not.

And it is that the childhood of an entire generation has been distilled into a wonderful game that will become a phenomenon.

This is how good adaptations are made.
