As an expression of their solidarity with the governorates affected by the earthquake and in condemnation of the unilateral coercive measures imposed on Syria that impede the achievement of the necessary response for those affected, the Teachers Syndicate carried out a sit-in today in front of the United Nations headquarters in Damascus.

The participants in the sit-in carried national flags and banners calling for the lifting of the siege and the abolition of the so-called “Caesar Law.”

The participants presented a statement to the Secretary-General of the United Nations and the United Nations Resident Coordinator in Syria, in which it stated, “After twelve years of an unjust global war and an unfair economic blockade on a people who endured injustice, siege and suffering to an extent that cannot be tolerated… We appeal to you to repeal the Caesar Act and completely lift the sanctions against Syria to secure medicine and food and build what is destroyed.”

In a statement to SANA, the Head of the Teachers Syndicate, Waheed Zaal, explained that Syrian teachers are calling on the international community to lift the blockade, which has greatly affected the living conditions of the Syrian people in various fields.

Zaal pointed out that the unilateral coercive measures imposed on Syria affected the educational reality and the difficulty of rehabilitating schools and securing educational requirements.

A number of teachers pointed out that the devastation left by the earthquake requires concerted efforts to support those affected by it. Both teachers, Nisreen Muhanna and Dana Youssef, pointed out that Syria today needs, more than ever, the provision of aid, relief equipment, and medical teams to help it overcome its ordeal as a result of the earthquake that occurred. Take lives, destroy buildings and infrastructure.

In turn, the Director of Education in Damascus, Suleiman Younis, appealed to the international community to end the siege as soon as possible, pointing out that the American measures are unfair and in violation of international humanitarian law.
