Air pollution: speed lowered by 20 km / h on Wednesday in the Alpes-Maritimes

The levels of fine particles are still on the rise in the Alpes-Maritimes department, in connection with the use of wood heating, road traffic, the industrial sector, but also due to the absence of wind - which prevents the dispersion of pollutants in the atmosphere -, AtmoSud issued an air quality bulletin on Tuesday morning leading to the triggering of the "information-recommendation" threshold for "winter combustion" type pollution.

In fact, the entire department will be placed on level 1 pollution alert on Wednesday, indicates the prefecture.

The maximum speed allowed on the roads will thus be lowered by 20 km/h, without however falling below 70 km/h.

This procedure is accompanied by the implementation of the following health and behavioral recommendations:

  • For the general population:


    - Reduce intense physical and sports activities;


    - Avoid intense physical and sports activities (for fragile people);


    - Avoid travel on major highways and their surroundings during peak periods;


    - Limit outings during the afternoon;


    - In case of respiratory or cardiac discomfort, seek advice from a pharmacist or consult a doctor.


  • Transport:


    - Limit, for private and professional travel, the use of motor vehicles and encourage the use of carpooling and public transport;


    - Prioritize non-polluting modes of travel (walking, cycling) for short journeys;


    - Defer, if possible, the trips that can be;


    - Electrically connect seagoing ships and river boats to the quayside in place of on-board electricity production by on-board generators, within the limits of available facilities.

  • Activities:


    - Postpone the agricultural spreading of fertilizers as well as the soil works;


    - Postpone maintenance or cleaning work with non-electric tools (mowers, hedge trimmers, etc.) or products based on organic solvents (paint, varnish, etc.);


  • Heating / burning:


    - Stop, during the heating period, the use of inefficient wood or coal combustion devices (open hearths, stoves acquired before 2002);


    - Control the temperature in buildings (heating, air conditioning);


    - Continue to ventilate the premises at least 10 minutes a day, summer and winter;


    - Respect the bans on burning in the open air;


    - Favor shorter outings and those that require the least effort;

As a reminder, there are three alert levels: information-recommendation, vigilance level 1 and vigilance level 2.
