"We are prepared to release the name of the person who committed these homicides," Chris Rozman, MSU's acting deputy chief of police and public safety, said Tuesday at a news conference.

"His first name is Anthony, his last name is McRae," Rozman said.

"Anthony Dwayne McRae, is a 43-year-old male."

The EW Sparrow Hospital is treating five victims of the shooting in its emergency room, a spokesperson told CNN.

He did not provide information on the severity of his injuries.

All classes, athletics and campus-related activities at MSU are canceled for 48 hours, MSU police said as officers in tactical gear arrived at the university.

“Please do NOT come to campus tomorrow,” they said.

Police reported gunshots near Berkey Hall on the East Lansing campus around 8:30 p.m. ET and tweeted to the campus community: "Please take cover immediately."

About an hour later, campus police said, "Another shooting has been reported at IM East."

“It appears there is only one suspect at this time,” MSU police said.

IM East is a campus gym about a kilometer away from Berkey Hall, where police first reported gunshots.

Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer was briefed on the shooting at the university.

“I have been informed about the shooting at Michigan State University.

Michigan State Police along with @msupolice, local police and first responders are on the ground.

Let's embrace the Spartan community tonight.

We will keep everyone updated as we learn more," the governor tweeted.

The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives in Detroit also tweeted that it was "responding to an active shooter" at the university at the time of the attack.

FBI special agents also responded to the attack, a spokesman for the FBI's Detroit office told CNN.

Around 10:10 p.m., police tweeted that Berkey Hall and other campus buildings had been cleared, including Brody Hall, Snyder/Phillips Hall, Mason Hall, Abbot Hall, Landon Hall and MSU Union.

MSU student Nithya Charles told CNN that she had taken refuge in a room at Campbell Hall, the campus student union, on the north side of campus.

"We don't know much," Charles told CNN's Erin Burnett, explaining that he had taken shelter with about 30 other people.

She said that she did not hear any shots, but that some of her classmates did.

"Obviously, everyone is a little stressed, but now they seem to be calm," said Charles.
