Citroen C4X on first drive - outside the template

2023-02-14T17:46:42.427Z

Citroen took the well-known C4, added a separate trunk and turned it into a coupe-crossover, which has been gaining momentum in recent years in the automotive industry. Is this what can give C4 local success? We went to the international launch in Madrid to check

Citroen C4 is an important model in Citroen's model range, as every compact recreational vehicle is important for every manufacturer.

Recreational vehicles are the mainstream today, and manufacturers want to be in that field because almost everyone wants one in their driveway.

But there are also those who want a more sporty look, "like a coupe".

Car manufacturers have found a solution for this: Audi with the Sportback models, Skoda with the Aniac Coupe, and Citroen now with the X.

With the design of the C4 X, Citroën essentially crosses several worlds (and therefore the X, in case you were wondering): an SUV with a fastback silhouette and a traditional 4-door configuration with a separate trunk added behind the rear doors.

The wheelbase is the same as the C4 and stands at 267 cm, but the length has grown by 24 cm to 460 cm, about 20 cm less than the C5 X. A side view emphasizes the extra legroom added to the C4.

The final result in the practical aspect is the trunk which has grown from 380 liters to a rather impressive 510 liters, but the loading opening has become relatively narrow.

Apparently it is not possible to hold the baguette at both ends.

Another advantage of the C4 X over the regular C4 is a lower drag coefficient, which slightly improved the driving range in the electric version, and a blunter rear seatback angle that contributes to the comfort of the occupants.

The passenger cabin, familiar to us from the C4, has now been given a new multimedia system that includes updates from the air and wireless connectivity to a cell phone.

The seats, as expected from Citroen, are comfortable and provide adjustable support for the lower back as well.

The projected dashboard remains relatively small, but it includes all the essential information and is complemented by an overhead display.

The quality of the materials is not one of the best in the category, but the assembly quality and finish are quite good.

The drive units offered remain the same as those known from the C4: a 1.2-liter turbo-gasoline engine that produces 130 hp, a 1.5-liter turbo-diesel engine that also produces 130 hp, and the highlight, an electric motor that produces 136 hp and 26.5 kg produced using a 50 kWh battery that allows a driving range of 360 km according to the manufacturer's statement (WLTP standard).

Interestingly, the group's upgraded drive system with 156 hp and a 54 kWh battery has not yet arrived in the C4X.

During the launch we drove the electric version and the gasoline version, and both presented satisfactory performance for everyday needs.

In the electric version, except for a single mode (B), we lack the ability to direct the power of the regenerative braking to several different modes according to the route of travel and the nature of driving.

Also, the brakes provided a hesitant feel during their initial stroke, a familiar phenomenon in electric vehicles that store energy during the initial stroke of the brake pedal.

The C4 X is not a sports car or pretends to be one.

The steering wheel does not provide feedback and the roll angles are tangible when you take it to the edge, but you will be very comfortable on an executive drive thanks to the suspension system with Citroen's progressive shock absorbers that have proven themselves in both versions.

The C4 X mainly appeals to people looking for high driving comfort and a body with an unusual configuration.

Taxi drivers will be able to enjoy the good driving comfort and use the full trunk in the diesel version, and private customers will be able to commute comfortably to work and daily errands in a gasoline or electric vehicle.

Which version would we prefer?

When we drove the gasoline version we had time to think about it and come to the surprising conclusion (for us, in overdrive) that we would prefer the C4 X in the electric version.

If you're already buying a car with high driving comfort and no sporty pretensions, then there should also be complete silence and zero vibrations in the passenger compartment.
