2023-02-14T20:28:45.077Z

The government wants to impose on pornographic sites a real verification of the age of Internet users, in order to block their access to minors.

From March, the government will test a "

double anonymity

" age verification solution in order to block minors' access to porn sites, Jean-Noël Barrot, Minister Delegate in charge of Digital.

During a hearing before the delegation for children's rights, the minister reaffirmed the government's desire to require pornographic sites to actually verify the age of Internet users, in order to block access to minors.

A case about to lead to the outcome of a legal battle with the sites.

“Sufficiently robust system”

In 2023, it is the end of access to pornographic sites for our children

”, had already launched the minister at the beginning of February.

We are working to bring out an age verification solution that respects a principle of double anonymity

,” he explained on Tuesday.

Whoever provides the certificate of majority does not know what it will be used for.

It can be a telecom operator, a digital identity provider or any other organization likely to attest to the majority of a person.

And the site on which the certificate is used does not know the identity of the person.

This is the principle of double anonymity

”.

"

In the opinion of Arcom as in the opinion of the CNIL, it is the most robust system, not only to solve once and for all the question of age verification on pornographic sites, but possibly in the future to carry out other age checks on other services from which we want to protect our children

", added Jean-Noël Barrot "

This double anonymity system will be tested from the end of March by a collective of companies

”, he continued, without further details.

We hope that in the coming months this solution will have proven itself

”.

What we are preparing is a system that will be robust enough to be unassailable

,”

This announcement comes as the CNIL and Arcom must publish their opinion on the technical solution they recommend.

Age verification systems must not only respect privacy but also resist circumvention tools like VPNs.

Currently, porn sites ask the Internet user for a simple declaration of confidence about their age.
