Happy event at Augsburg Zoo.

Rhino lady Wiesje gave birth to a little pachyderm and surprised the keepers with it.

Augsburg – rhino, tiger and polar bear.

No, that's not the name of the latest zoo documentary series on ARD.

These animals are often used symbolically to draw attention to the extinction of various animal species worldwide.

Especially the pachyderm with the distinctive horn are often hunted by poachers because of that.

Therefore, many species are already threatened with extinction.

The news from the Augsburg Zoo is therefore all the more gratifying.

A little rhino bull saw the light of day there.

Rhino offspring at Augsburg Zoo: Maybe he can go out on Sunday

The happy event happened at the Augsburg Zoo at the beginning of the week.

The five and a half year old rhino lady Wiesje had given birth to a healthy boy.

In addition to numerous congratulations on Facebook, many users wished the little one a good start in life and health.

For example, one woman wrote: "Congratulations, all the best for the little one, he will grow up quickly and stay healthy!" Another expressed her regret that she will probably not see the pachyderm when she visits on Saturday .

In fact, the rhino bull should not go to the outdoor facility until Sunday at the earliest.

So far it has been too cold for the male offspring outdoors.

"If the weather continues to be so good, it will be visible in our outdoor enclosure on Sunday," the zoo reported on Facebook on Friday.

Nurses did not expect the birth until the end of 2023

Wiesje came to Augsburg from the Dutch zoo in Arnhem in October 2020.

The zoo keepers were surprised by the birth.

Although they had assumed that Wiesje was pregnant, a birth was only expected towards the end of 2023.

Gestation lasts around 16 months for rhinos and the zoo had guessed that the mother was not mated until April 2022.
