Tom Cruise stole the show at the 95th Oscars Luncheon, the annual gathering celebrating Academy Award nominees.

But the note for Argentines was given by the great Ricardo Darín, who as part of Argentina, 1985, nominated for Best International Film, approached

Cruise with director

Santiago Miter to take a picture together.

He failed to say "Two powers greet each other".

The awards ceremony will take place on Sunday, March 12 at the Dolby Theater in Los Angeles.

There, the film starring Ricardo Darín and

Peter Lanzan

will compete against

All Quiet in the Western Front

, from Germany;

Close

, from Belgium;

EO

, from Poland, and

The Quiet Girl

, from Ireland.

Ricardo Darín and Santiago Miter participated in the Luncheon, the lunch that entertains the nominees.

And they also received greetings and recognition from the artists present.

At the Beverly Hilton Hotel, the in-person event featured opening remarks from Academy President

Janet Yang

.

The roll call of the 182 attendees this year was read by Devon Franklin, a member of the Board of Governors, who began with Jamie Lee Curtis, another of those who took photos with Cruise, and ended with Guillermo del Toro.

Memories of the slap

In addition to Yang addressing the Will Smith controversy at the top of the event to attendees (without saying his name), more than 200 guests gathered to celebrate the achievements of cinema since 2022. Of those, 182 were official nominees for the ceremony this year, the largest turnout in history.

Notable names missing included best actress nominees Ana de Armas (

Blonde

) and Andrea Riseborough (

To Leslie

), supporting actor Barry Keoghan (

The Banshees of Inisherin

) and producer James Cameron (

Avatar: The Waterway).

Cruise's star

Nominated as a producer for

Top Gun: Maverick

, along with Jerry Bruckheimer, Christopher McQuarrie and David Ellison, Tom Cruise walked the red carpet, greeting his colleagues and speaking briefly to reporters, at his first major awards campaign event for the season.

Cruise could hardly take a few steps without being approached by a person from the industry, including Steven Spielberg - they were very crony, denying a bad relationship between them -, Brendan Gleeson, Paul Mescal, Baz Luhrmann and Bonnie Arnold.

Top Gun: Maverick

is nominated for six Oscars, including Best Picture, and is a strong contender for the award.

The requests of the director of the Academy

The Academy has all 23 categories again on the broadcast, so Janet Yang asked that the acceptance speeches be kept short.

Yang went to the assistant lounge and asked them to abide by the rules of keeping their speeches to 45 seconds total.

“They have to work with us.

This is live television.

Keep it short, sweet and to the point, please."

A piece of information that drew attention at Luncheon -as this lunch is called.

is that no one from the press sat down with the nominees.

Traditionally, the attending press from various outlets would get a random number that assigned them to a table where the nominees sat.

A fair (and fun) process would place a journalist at one of the tables.

However, multiple sources told

Variety

that some nominated attendees were not comfortable with a member of the press at their table.
