Nearly 200 migrant aid associations urged British politicians on Tuesday to clearly "

condemn

" violence against refugees, denouncing the "

inflammatory language

" of some after a far-right demonstration marred by violence.

"

Leaders of all parties must now take a clear position and condemn any new violence against those who have come here to find safety, and define measures to prevent them

", declare these associations in an open letter published by the collective Together with Refugees.

Demonization of migrants

The signatories, including the associations Care4Calais, Save the Children or Refugee Council denounce "

the inflammatory language

" used by certain politicians to "

demonize them

".

They cite for example the word "

invasion

", pronounced by the Minister of the Interior Suella Braverman, with a very firm speech on immigration.

This letter is published a few days after a demonstration by far-right activists in front of a hotel requisitioned to house asylum seekers in Knowsley, near Liverpool (north-west of England).

The demonstration degenerated into violent clashes with the police, and fifteen people were arrested, including a 19-year-old young man, charged on Monday with violent disturbance of public order and assault on a police officer.

The Home Secretary had condemned the following day "

the appalling disorder at Knowsley

".

"

The alleged behavior of some asylum seekers is never an excuse for violence and intimidation

," she wrote on Twitter.

Government reaction

A spokesperson for the ministry reacted to this letter, recalling the minister's condemnation.

"

The welfare of the asylum seekers in our care is of the utmost importance and we will work with the police to ensure their safety

," he added.

The Conservative government has made immigration control one of its priorities, in particular to stop the arrival of migrants on small boats from France.

More than 45,000 people have thus crossed the Channel on these makeshift boats in 2022 to seek asylum in the United Kingdom, a record and an influx that the asylum system is struggling to manage.

"

The responsibility to create a system that is fair, benevolent and brings cohesion rather than division is the responsibility of the

political leaders", argue the associations in their letter.

Those who encourage this anger and violence bring shame to this country

,” they add.
