A week after the launch of the first suspected Chinese spy balloon, US forces were able to recover "important" sensors. A balloon is also said to have flown over Japan – in early 2022.

According to the United States, it was able to salvage a sensor and electronic parts from the Chinese balloon that was shot down a week ago.

"Our teams were able to recover important debris," the US military said on Monday.

This included "the main sensor and electronics" of the balloon.

Key sensors, which were probably used to gather information, were also secured.

The day-long overflight of the Chinese balloon over the United States had led to a scandal between Washington and Beijing.

A US fighter jet shot him down over the sea on February 4, and the US military has been looking for debris ever since.

According to Washington, it was a Chinese spy balloon.

Beijing, in turn, rejects this and speaks of a civil balloon for meteorological purposes that is off course.

After the balloon was shot down, the USA have taken three suspicious flying objects out of the sky in the past few days.

On Friday, a second object was shot down near Deadhorse, Alaska.

A third object was destroyed over Canada's Yukon on Saturday.

On Sunday, a US jet shot down the fourth flying object over the US-Canada border over Lake Huron.

Washington then said last week that the downed balloon was one of a fleet of spy balloons that flew across five continents.

Probably also an incident in Japan

According to a Japanese media report, the Tokyo government has also come to the conclusion that an object that flew over its waters near the southwestern region of Kyushu in January 2022 was most likely a Chinese balloon.

Unlike in the USA, the salvage of the flying object in Canada is still in its infancy.

A Royal Canadian Mounted Police official said Monday the object has not yet been located.

"I am not aware that we found the debris at this point in the Lake Huron incident," said Sean McGillis, RCMP Deputy Commissioner.

He said the search is "at a very early stage."
