For Giffey, the Berlin election ended in defeat, but she still wants to govern.

This causes trouble for Markus Lanz – just like the misguided migration policy.

Hamburg – Berlin has voted – for the second time in just under a year and a half.

The CDU emerged as the big winner from the repeat election and, despite an increase in votes of more than ten percent, seems to have lost out in the end.

In his ZDF talk, Markus Lanz asks how this could have happened?

Markus Lanz: Serap Güler finds Giffey's actions after the 2023 Berlin election "cheeky"

First of all, Serap Güler finds it “cheeky” that incumbent Franziska Giffey (SPD) is still making government claims after her electoral defeat.

For the CDU politician, a red-red-green coalition would not correspond to the will of the voters because the clear winner of the vote is Kai Wegner and thus the CDU.

Author Juli Zeh reminds that the winner of the election does not represent the entire electorate.

In addition, a red-red-green alliance that has ruled Berlin for the past seven years is not yet set in stone, as exploratory talks are still pending.

According to Lanz, the CDU could largely be left out of these talks because of the sharp shots fired at the other parties during the election campaign.

Güler replies that all factions fought hard.

She also fears an increase in disenchantment with politics if the CDU, as the clear winner of the election, is not allowed to govern.

Güler on Friedrich Merz's "Pascha" statement: "I wouldn't have said it that way"

Serap Güler is far less indignant when asked about certain statements by Friedrich Merz.

In January, the chairman of the CDU/CSU parliamentary group described children with a migration background to Markus Lanz as “little Paschas”.

Güler, who grew up as a child of Turkish guest workers in Germany, condemns her party member's choice of words: "I wouldn't have said it like that." In the same breath, she praises Merz for addressing the existing problems.

However, the core of his statements was lost due to the questionable formulation.

Zeh jumps to Güler's side and says that in politics strong words are always thrown around, which is why she doesn't want to overrate the "Pascha" formulation, which she doesn't appreciate.

District Administrator Marco Scherf also rejects the drastic words of Friedrich Merz, but sees his arguments confirmed in reality.

For example, women with a migration background would not comment on some topics in class because they are afraid of how their families will react.

Migration with Markus Lanz: The municipalities are overwhelmed when it comes to caring for refugees

Scherf recently caused a stir with an incendiary letter, which he addressed to the Federal Chancellor, among others.

In the said document, the Greens politician describes the excessive demands placed on local authorities when it comes to accommodating refugees.

With Markus Lanz, Scherf confirms that he can no longer manage the wave of refugees in his district.

There is simply a lack of available living space, even in rural areas.

Refugee homes are also not suitable accommodation for long-term integration, especially since there is too little space for education and medical care.

"Everything is missing," is Scherf's verdict.

In this context, the district administrator criticizes Interior Minister Nancy Faeser, who advises the municipalities to use other federal buildings to accommodate the refugees.

Scherf explains that there are no such facilities in his constituency, so schools and gyms have to be used instead.

This, in turn, would make everyday school life more difficult for children who have already suffered enough from the pandemic.

Güler is therefore calling for a reduction in the number of refugees we take in, since we lack the necessary infrastructure to provide for the newcomers adequately.

In this regard, Scherf and Güler are in favor of fences at the EU borders.

People could be housed at the border and scrutinized for an asylum procedure.

Refugees in Germany: Compulsory daycare is nothing more than a mirage

Zeh doesn't want to look too far into the distance.

In her view, the existing refugees in the country should be better distributed.

After all, migration is a model for success.

According to Zeh, the government is sending the wrong signal to the employees and volunteers who are committed to integration when it speaks of failed migration policies.

For Scherf, the much-cited compulsory day-care center for children with a migration background is just as ineffective.

People should be introduced much more with offers.

Güler also believes that a daycare requirement that is only limited to the children of refugees is not sufficient.

Zeh reminds us that day-care centers are already at their limit.

A daycare obligation is therefore not feasible at all due to waiting lists and staffing problems.

Scherf agrees and would like more debates about measures that seem really sensible and realistic.

In addition, the federal states and municipalities needed significantly more funds from the federal government for the implementation.

"Markus Lanz" - The conclusion of the show

In the refugee discussion, the existing problems must be called by name.

These include, among other things, failures in the infrastructure and a lack of willingness to integrate.

Assigning blame, however, contributes just as little to an improvement as the demands for utopian solutions.

Politicians must not get lost in bogus debates and should instead listen more to the people from the communities who ultimately make migration possible.
