Believing in the importance of voluntary work, and with the aim of supporting the people in the governorates affected by the earthquake, and extending a helping hand to them with everything necessary to overcome the effects of this ordeal, a number of young engineers launched an initiative titled (Evaluating the safety of buildings and assessing the damage caused as a result of the earthquake).

In a statement to SANA reporter, the structural engineer, Ali Al-Hassan, BA in Civil Engineering - Department of Structural Engineering from Al-Baath University, and the owner of the initiative, indicated that in light of the recent frequent earthquakes, and out of concern for the public interest and social responsibility with regard to transferring experiences, educating citizens, and calming people in Post-traumatic phase, this initiative was launched with the aim of assessing the safety of residential buildings and their damages as a result of the earthquake.

Al-Hassan indicated that the purpose of the initiative is to conduct an immediate initial assessment of residential buildings, calm and educate residents while reassuring fearful people, increasing community awareness of the dangers, and ensuring cooperation among residents to disseminate information that would help increase reassurance and reduce the state of terror and panic.

Al-Hassan stressed that the field of application of the initiative is all areas affected by the impact of the earthquake, aftershocks, and inhabited residential buildings in which cracks or cracks occurred, indicating that the initiative’s work team is the (ISO) engineering group with its construction team consisting of 6 civil engineers, and 15 volunteer engineers from all over the world. Governorates, and 12 students from the College of Civil Engineering in their final year, under the supervision of engineers specialized in technical evaluation work for existing and damaged buildings and various support techniques.

He also explained that the work mechanism includes creating quick assessment forms with clarification of some points in them, so that engineers know the direction and make the most appropriate decision, while explaining a set of basic information related to the building’s supporting structure and cladding materials to be easily described, while publishing a set of procedures and behaviors that would ensure the safety of citizens. During and after the earthquake, stressing that they have so far uncovered 250 houses in Homs and Hama.

Engineer Ali Al-Hassan specializes in strengthening and consolidating existing and damaged buildings and is a member of the Training and Rehabilitation Committee at the Syrian Engineers Union branch in Homs. He is the director and founder of the Training Program for Fresh Graduate Engineers (TFI) and a consultant to the Aga Khan Foundation for Urban Development to train and qualify engineering cadres.
