A Shreveport, Louisiana, police officer filed a federal wrongful-death lawsuit against the officer.

The lawsuit filed Saturday in the Western District of Louisiana alleges the agent violated Alonzo Bagley's Fourth Amendment rights.

Bagley, 43, was fatally shot earlier this month after police responded to a domestic disturbance call at a residential building, the Louisiana State Police said in a statement.

When two officers arrived around 10:50 p.m. on February 3, Bagley jumped from an apartment balcony and fled, according to a statement from the state police, which is the agency investigating the shooting.

After a brief pursuit on foot, an officer "located Mr. Bagley as he was turning the corner of a building and fired a shot with his service weapon, striking Mr. Bagley in the chest," state police said.

Bagley was later pronounced dead at a hospital.

Colonel Lamar Davis, superintendent of the Louisiana State Police, testified that detectives did not find any weapons on or near Bagley when they processed the crime scene.

The "use of deadly force against an unarmed male who posed no threat is factually unreasonable, excessive, and totally unjustified," the lawsuit alleges.

The family is seeking more than $10 million in damages, according to the lawsuit.

The officer who shot Bagley was identified by state police as Alexander Tyler.

Tyler is currently on paid administrative leave pending the results of the state police investigation, the Shreveport Police Department told CNN.

The agent has been with the department since May 2021, Chief Wayne Smith said.

The investigation into Bagley's shooting death comes at a time when police use of force against people of color, particularly black Americans, is coming under intense scrutiny around the world. country, including the brutal beating of Tire Nichols by Memphis officers while conducting what police say was a traffic stop.

"I ask the community to be patient as we continue to conduct a very thorough investigation," Davis said after Bagley's death.

"Transparency in the investigation is a priority for our agency."

Investigators are reviewing the dash and body camera videos and hope to make them public, Davis said.

"The family hopes to see the video before (Bagley's) funeral," Ronald Haley, an attorney for the family, told CNN, noting that the funeral is scheduled for this Saturday.
