Opposition Chairman Yair Lapid today (Wednesday) demanded from the coalition to halt the promotion of the legal revolution for 60 days to allow President Yitzhak Herzog to establish a presidential committee. Lapid spoke with President Herzog before the speech

. Put here on the table what a proper procedure looks like.

What does a presidential committee mean, how is it supposed to work," said Lapid in a speech at the Knesset plenum. "The starting point is a notice of the suspension of legislation for 60 days before the first reading, to allow the president to lead the process.

60 days is the blink of an eye in the life of democracy.

We have waited 74 years, nothing will happen if it takes a few more weeks, thanks to which we will save the people of Israel from a terrible crisis."

The Chairman of the Constitution Committee, MK Simcha Rotman, this morning withdrew the bill on the enhancement clause, which was supposed to be voted on in a preliminary reading in the Knesset plenum.

Rothman removed the bill from the agenda in light of the opposition's claims that the proposal cannot be promoted through a private track if the same proposal is being promoted through another track on behalf of the Constitution Committee.

MK Rotman contacted the Knesset's spokesperson, attorney Sagit Afik, to examine whether this claim was true, but in the meantime decided to withdraw the bill from the agenda until a new announcement. However, the Knesset's assessment is that Rotman removed the bill from the agenda as well Because of the attempts to negotiate with the opposition on the legal reform.

The coalition is expected to later withdraw from the agenda both the Deri law designed to qualify the appointment of the Shas chairman as a minister despite his disqualification by the High Court and also MK Moshe Saada's law of impeachment designed to separate You are a prosecutor from the prosecutor's office and be subordinate to the minister of justice.

The legal revolution

The revolution planned by the government includes a series of significant changes in the legal system, such as a determination that only an expanded composition of the High Court can invalidate legislation passed by the Knesset. Another step of the revolution, designed to strengthen the government's hand vis-à-vis the court, is the establishment of a superseding clause that will nullify decisions of the High Court by a majority of only 61 members of the Knesset, as well as changing the composition of the committee for the selection of judges so that it is fully controlled by the coalition.

The reform also deals with weakening the power of the legal advisers to the government, so that their position will not bind the government, and with the elimination of the reason for reasonableness, which, among other things, significantly limits the court's ability to intervene in the appointment of senior officials.
