Mountain Law, a fiasco

2023-02-15T12:23:44.896Z

NEWS - Announced on November 1, the entry into force of the regulations imposing winter tires in 48 departments has been postponed to the 2023-2024 season.

It is to no longer include anything in it.

Passed in 2016, the Mountain Law was to come into force during the winter of 2021-2022.

It imposes in the mountainous areas of 48 departments the assembly of equipment adapted to winter climatic conditions, namely winter or four-season tires, chains or snow socks, for a period of six months, from November 1 to 31 March.

Finally, in a world that was still living under the influence of Covid, it was decided to postpone its application for a year.

However, a few weeks ago, the public authorities gave up enforcing it, announcing that non-compliance with the regulations would not be subject to any sanction.

It would seem to pay more to punish speed.

This postponement will not encourage the French motorists concerned to equip themselves with winter tires while a study recently carried out by Goodyear mentioned that France is the country where drivers keep summer tires the most all year round. (21%).

However, pneumatic equipment adapted to a slippery and snow-covered road contributes to improving safety and reducing accidents.

Studies showed in 2021 that 15% of vehicles involved in a traffic accident had a vehicle-related factor.

In about 10% of cases, the tire was at fault, whether it was a pressure problem, wear or unsuitability for its environment.

The study by the manufacturer Goodyear highlights differences in perception and confidence depending on the country.

32% of French drivers say they are “without fear” when asked what they think of driving in winter weather.

This is six points above the European average.

While 79% of Romanian motorists have clearly understood the advantage of putting on tires suitable for winter driving, only 56% of the French consider the subject.

The British bring up the rear with 34%.

In short, tires would be a story in the gum for a large majority of French people.

When it comes to replacing tires based on wear and not the seasons, France is at the bottom.

There is cause for concern here because the tire is a fundamental element of road safety.

It is the only equipment that connects the car to the road.

Without a doubt, the public authorities, rather than focusing on repression, should invest massively in pedagogy and training.

The numbers are ruthless.

Despite the reinforcement of the repressive arsenal, the number of deaths on the roads does not decrease.
