(CNN) --

Nissan recalled more than 400,000 older model SUVs, trucks and vans in the United States because the brand's insignia on the steering wheel can break or detach when the airbag inflates in an emergency.

Vehicle airbags inflate with explosive force in a crash and, in some of these vehicles, the round Nissan logo or parts thereof can become dangerous projectiles.

Nissan has learned of four injuries allegedly related to this issue, according to a letter the automaker sent to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA).

The problem is believed to exist in only 0.3% of recalled vehicles.

Owners of these models will be asked to take their vehicle to a Nissan dealer to have the parts inspected, though the company is still looking for a solution.

The badge, found in front of the steering wheel's horn button, belongs to an airbag assembly produced by Nissan supplier Autoliv, which used badging from a second supplier that was not fully identified.

According to a Nissan investigation reported to authorities, the badges were apparently manufactured incorrectly, causing them to weaken over time and sometimes crack.

The models involved in the recall are 2008 to 2011 Nissan Titan and Frontier trucks and Frontier, Xterra, Pathfinder and Armada SUVs;

and 2008 and 2009 Quest minivans.

People with models that may be involved are asked to visit NHTSA.gov to see if their vehicle is among those recalled.
