Munich – At a session in the state parliament on Tuesday (February 14) in Munich, the Bavarian Ministry of Transport presented the first picture of the new S-Bahn.

It was emphasized, however, that the color scheme is not set in stone - so it could also stay with the conventional track red.

"Essential design elements will be included by the potential manufacturer," said a railway spokesman when asked by our newspaper.

What is certain is that the vehicles will be constructed as a block train – as with the new Munich subways, you will be able to walk through the approximately 200 meter long vehicle from front to back.

The S-Bahn wants to buy around 90 trains, S-Bahn boss Heiko Büttner announced some time ago.

They will then have the capacity of 300 of today's trains, each only 70 meters long.

The new trains are to “run gradually at the end of the 2020s and offer numerous advantages for passengers and operational stability,” the railway spokesman continued.

There is 12 percent more capacity, continuity, more passenger information, no more coupling and no more wings of the trains.

The members of the so-called subcommittee "Future main route" want to monitor the construction of the second S-Bahn main route more closely in the future.

Eleven MPs, chaired by CSU MP Jürgen Baumgärtner, want regular information from the railways and the ministry in the future.

Baumgärtner announced that the deputies also want to inspect the trunk line construction site in the near future.

Amazing: Although the Free State is currently the main donor for the second tube, with 3.8 billion euros, and the state parliament releases the money with resolutions, the MPs have never visited Bavaria's largest construction site as a whole.

The second tube will cost over seven instead of 3.8 billion euros, and it will not be finished in 2028, but only in the mid-2030s - that much is known.

Just who is to blame?

The ministry's view was clear yesterday: Deutsche Bahn, as the client, bears the main responsibility.

"In the past," said an official from the Ministry of Transport at the meeting, "the cooperation between Deutsche Bahn was rather tough, you have to say it like that."

He hopes that "a different wind is blowing" now.

That was too one-sided for the SPD deputy Natscha Kohnen: "I don't like the diction of blaming the railways for everything." The Munich CSU deputy Josef Schmid was also surprised that the railways had made various rescheduling in the past, but always asserted that the success was "cost-neutral" - and the ministry never publicly contradicted.
