The gas was worth nearly 54 euros per megawatt hour (MWh) on the European market on Wednesday.
A price far removed from the 311 euros reached in August, when the price of natural gas was nearly 12 times higher than its level in previous years.
The shock was such that Brussels decided to put in place a safeguard to avoid new outbreaks.
This
“market correction mechanism”,
decided in December, entered into force on Wednesday, for one year.
It is based on two essential criteria.
It is triggered when the price of natural gas, recorded on the Dutch futures market, known as TTF, exceeds 180 euros per megawatt hour for three working days.
Provided that, over the same period, the price of gas imported by the EU is 35 euros higher than the world average price of liquefied natural gas (LNG).
