They only renovated the living room, but it changed everything - voila! Home and design

The budget allocated for the renovation was earmarked for upgrading the living room only, but what to do when the living room is connected to the kitchen and the dining area and all in one large, shared space? Pay attention to the designer's creative solutions

The Dagan family home in Kadima is not the example of a "lost case" that designers sometimes encounter, the family's home is actually on the other side of the scale, a warm and cozy home in a community with a rural character and a space that is no longer seen in the city, which only needed a small upgrade to be perfect for the family

"The only space we wanted to treat was the living room. Without touching the other parts of the house and with minimal changes in the kitchen," says Naama Miron Yosef, the designer who planned the renovation.

This created a special challenge, because the living room and the kitchen became one space, and it was necessary to create a uniform design language and flow between the two spaces that would feel natural.

Without it being clear where the 'old' part is and where the renovated part is.

"It's like solving an equation with a lot of disappearances," she explains.

"Each of the parameters is a constraint that must be taken into account. There is the given space, which cannot be changed. There is the existing kitchen, which must be taken into account. There is the budget that must be adhered to and there are the wishes of the family, which must be expressed with as few compromises as possible. Every parameter that is changed affects the rest. For example, the more changes we make in the kitchen, it will come at the expense of the rest of the budget, but on the other hand, it will allow more flexibility in the design of the space."

"The real challenge was to overcome all the technical obstacles such as the shape of the space or the old kitchen that was not replaced, and to create for the family the cozy and inviting space exactly as they wanted and without breaking the budget framework, and I am happy to say that we were able to meet this challenge."

"Continuity was a key requirement but it also created other challenges."

In modern construction, the boundaries between the living room or the family space and the kitchen are blurring.

It is actually a single, continuous space, usually without partitions, which is used entirely for family gatherings, meetings and entertaining.

Often without physical, conceptual, or functional separation and all the more without design - between the living room space and the kitchen space.

"The first goal was to open up the space, to create a space that gives a spacious and inviting feeling, within a lighted space that is connected both to the kitchen next to it and to the balcony outside and creates a continuum of hospitality and family gathering space. We achieved the connection to the balcony and the entrance of Or by upgrading the outdoor hospitality area, and opening an exit showcase In the center of the living room. We achieved the continuity of the entire space by a design decision to play with vertical and horizontal lines that were reflected in the material and texture games. The continuity was a key requirement but it also created other challenges."

"Since we wanted to open up the space, a challenge arose as to where to place the television, so that the viewing direction and distance would be correct, and without crossing the space? The solution was to place the television on an autonomous pole with a hinge, so that it could be turned in different directions as needed, or placed parallel to the wall and leave the space open"

"Another element that was a challenge was a supporting column located in the center of the space. "The natural tendency is to try to 'hide' such an element, but in this case we decided to make it stand out," says the designer. "We exposed the raw material from which it is made The pillar (concrete) and we created a sense of stability in the space.

In addition, we gained a perfect back for the fireplace that also placed it in the optimal position to efficiently heat the entire space, and also created a connection between the two parts of the space in a smooth and flowing way.

This is how the supporting column turned from a divider into a connector."

What did you end up doing about the old kitchen, which was not the focus of the renovation?

"We had to make revolutions in the kitchen, but they were reduced to the external expressions - the cabinet doors mainly. To combine the desired modernity with the required warmth, I combined elements with clean lines and right angles, and on the other hand, a combination of a lot of wood both in the parquet floor and in various elements on the walls," she says Naama Miron Yosef.

"Another element that enters the space is the entrance closet, or as I call it: 'Aron Shalom-Beit.' Order, and also the peace of the house."
