"The President's outline": in the political system everyone admits that there will not really be a compromise Israel today

2023-02-16T21:41:50.444Z

Gantz's post-trauma from that coalition with Netanyahu still reverberates - and it has consequences for the entire country • It caused the formation of the government of change, and it will prevent Gantz from closing a deal

"It is a mitzvah to tell the litigants at the beginning, do you want a law or a compromise. If they want a compromise, let's make a compromise between them, and any court that makes a compromise is always excellent," wrote Rambam. But to the sorrow of some readers and to the joy of others - everyone in the political system admits that there will be no Really a compromise. No one really sees it as a good thing.

But make no mistake.

On the way we will hear more about attempts to negotiate.

The condition will be that one party meets the conditions of the other.

The conditions, by the way, change every few hours to make sure that there will be no real negotiations between the parties.

Because these days, in light of Levin's reform, every second citizen has become an expert in constitutional law - you probably know that the leading principle in contract law is good faith.

But regardless of the huge ideological gaps that exist, even now the preliminary negotiations are done in bad faith and motivated by political considerations that prevent reaching a true compromise.

The transformation of Herzog's profession from national president to national mediator assigns him one of the most difficult roles.

Even in apartment brokerage, the broker knows who owns the apartment and who is the buyer.

One of Herzog's main problems is that there are not two sides to the deal.

While in the coalition you can say that if you closed with Levin or Deri - like you also closed with Smotrich and Ben Gvir - in the opposition the situation is the opposite.

Each player there is independent.

What is the definition of compromise by broad agreement?

A deal with Gantz?

with a torch?

The two do not live on the same frequency.

Same as Michaeli and Lieberman.

Let's assume that the state camp, as it is called, is the address for closing a deal that will unite the kingdom.

He is also the closest ideologically among the other opposition parties to achieving compromises with Rothman and Levin on the legal issue.

The problem is that Gantz's post-trauma from that coalition with Netanyahu still reverberates - and has consequences for the entire country.

She caused the formation of the government of change, and she will prevent Gantz from closing a deal.

That's why he always goes one step forward and two steps back.

On the one hand, he would like to hammer out the compromise, and on the other hand, he is afraid to be alone again in the tower with Netanyahu and allow Lapid to attack him in the left base.

This, as mentioned, is a lack of good faith and prioritizing political considerations.

Limited maneuvering space

But he is not the only one.

Lapid can't really afford to compromise.

The reform fuels the protest against the government, a protest that has not been seen here for a long time.

Without a majority in the Knesset, Lapid needs fuel for protest like air for breathing.

He won't give it up.

As for Rothman and Levin, there is no doubt that the reform is in their minds from an ideological point of view, but this week they also remembered the political considerations.

Their phones were bombarded with angry messages from right-wing people after the Deri law and the surrogacy clause were removed from the Knesset's agenda at the request of the president on Wednesday to allow negotiations.

Levin and Rothman were pressed, and issued a statement that there was no stopping the legislation.

On top of that, Gafni abandoned the plenum in protest over the removal of the override clause - wants to say that the coalition's room for maneuver is also limited.

As for Michali and Lieberman, the Labor chairman always wants to flank Lapid from the left, in order to make political capital on the hard core of the protest that is not ready to talk with the government. The chairman of Yisrael Beitenu will never give the government a right-wing achievement of reforming the justice system by consent.

At least one thing can be safely said: there is a president in Jerusalem.

The question is whether we will find out that he is also a magician.
