It is Democrat John Fetterman, who had a stroke last year. He said that he failed to adjust to life in Washington.

US Senator John Fetterman, who suffered a stroke on the campaign trail in May 2022, was hospitalized again this week for treatment

for clinical depression

.

"Senator Fetterman attended

Walter Reed Military Medical Center

for treatment for clinical depression," said his chief of staff, Adam Jentleson.

"While John has experienced depression sporadically in his life,

it has only become severe in recent weeks

," Jentleson added.

Last week, the 53-year-old Democrat was admitted to Georgetown University Hospital after suffering dizziness during a lawmakers' conference.

On Monday, Dr. Brian Monahan, who treats members of Congress, evaluated Fetterman and on Wednesday recommended that the senator receive care at Walter Reed, Jentleson said.

The spokesman said that Fetterman will be able to serve out his six-year term and that "with the proper care he will receive he will be back soon."

Fetterman

had a stroke last year

while campaigning for the Senate and won the primary while still in the hospital, when doctors diagnosed him with atrial fibrillation and cardiomyopathy.

In the final campaign and as a rival to the Republican candidate Mehmet Oz, Fetterman, then lieutenant governor of Pennsylvania, showed the aftermath of the heart attack

with difficulty speaking

and, in some cases, to string together sentences.

Republicans pointed out that these consequences made Fetterman unfit for the job as a senator, while Democrats emphasized Fetterman's dedication to overcoming difficulties.

In November, Fetterman defeated Oz, who had the endorsement of former President Donald Trump (2017-2021), thus helping his party retain control of the Senate.
