(by Valentina Roncati) (ANSA) - ROME, FEBRUARY 16 - The centre-left's opposition to autonomy and government policies has started again from education.

All four Regions which remained in the hands of the centre-left, in fact, have challenged or decided to challenge the so-called school downsizing, concentrated in the South, in particular Campania, Sicily, Calabria, Puglia, Sardinia, due to the demographic decline and a more complex pre-existing situation which covers all of Italy.

Campania began with the appeal before the Constitutional Court presented by the governor Vincenzo De Luca who hoped to be followed by the other governors of the South.

And today, in fact, the Puglia Region has also decided to challenge the rule on sizing in the Constitutional Court which provides for the unification and closure of schools with fewer than 900 students enrolled.

The Puglia Region will ask the Consulta, as already proposed by other Regions, "

Stefano Bonaccini, candidate for the secretariat of the Democratic Party and president of the Emilia Romagna Region, also announced that in the next few days he will announce the appeal of the Government's provision on cuts to public schools before the Constitutional Court.

And likewise the Tuscan Council two days ago decided to appeal to the Constitutional Court against the provision of the budget law, approved in December by the Government, on school unifications." This means that in Tuscany the unifications lead to a reduction in staff of about 40 units among top figures, as well as staff and high-level officials in the secretariats. It is evident that with 40 fewer directors, institutes are going to merge", explained the president of Tuscany, Eugenio Giani.

Strong criticisms come from the Democratic Party: "The first choices of the government in the field of education are serious and foreshadow a real attack on public schools. In particular, the rule on school sizing will, in fact, determine the reduction, not only of the seats, which will inevitably be merged, but also of the contingent of school principals and directors of general and administrative services, who will be almost halved compared to today", said the leader of the Democratic Party in the Chamber Debora Serracchiani and the leader of the Culture committee Irene Manzi.

Strongly against the unions as well.

"School sizing is written but they are called cuts", summarized the Flc CGIL secretary, FrancescoSinopoli.
