Today, the Russian Foreign Ministry summoned the Austrian ambassador to Moscow, Warner Almhofer, and presented him with a (strongly worded protest) against Vienna's decision to consider four Russian diplomats persona non grata, and also informed him of its decision to expel four employees of the Austrian embassy.
And the Russian Foreign Ministry said in a statement reported by Sputnik: “Within the logic of the principle of reciprocity, four employees of the Austrian embassy in Russia have been declared persona non grata, and they must leave Russian territory no later than February 23.”
The Russian Foreign Ministry added: “Making up difficulties regarding the issuance of visas for official Russian delegations traveling to Vienna to participate in multilateral events is inconsistent with Austria’s obligations as a host country.”
In early February, the Austrian Foreign Ministry considered that diplomats from the Russian embassy and two diplomats from the permanent mission of Russia to the United Nations are persona non grata “because of their actions that contradict their diplomatic status,” as it claimed.
