An influential Iranian university professor, Saïd Madani Ghahfarokhi, detained since May 2022 in Tehran, was sentenced to eight years in prison, his lawyer told AFP on Thursday.

My client was sentenced to eight years in prison for forming a hostile group and one year for
propaganda against the system,” said Me Mahmoud Behzadirad, specifying that the verdict was final.
Confusion of grief
Professor of sociology at Allameh Tabatabai University in Tehran, Saïd Madani Ghahfarokhi, 62, was arrested in mid-May.
Due to the confusion of sentences, he should serve the highest, that of eight years, his lawyer said.
Said Madani Ghahfarokhi, who has published several books on social evils in Iran, in particular on prostitution, violence against women, child abuse or drug addiction, has already been arrested several times and sentenced to six years in prison in 2012.

Since my client has been in prison, he has been consulted by some officials to find ways to deal with the violence
" during the demonstrations sparked by the death of Mahsa Amini in September, said Me Behzadirad.
At the beginning of February, Saïd Madani Ghahfarokhi published from prison a long analysis of the protest movement, seeing in it the “
vision of the future Iran
”.
The Islamic Republic has released dozens of personalities in recent days as part of an amnesty granted by Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei on the occasion of a national holiday.
