The jury in the trial against Genaro García Luna, Mexico's former Secretary of Public Security, began their deliberations this Thursday shortly after noon after receiving instructions on matters of law and rules of evidence from Judge Brian Cogan.

The jury in the trial against Genaro García Luna, Mexico's former Secretary of Public Security, began their deliberations this Thursday shortly after noon after receiving instructions on matters of law and rules of evidence from Judge Brian Cogan.

For approximately two and a half hours, the magistrate of the Eastern District Court in New York explained each of the charges to the panel members, the violations of law that they have to consider to find the defendant innocent or guilty, and what the evidence in this case.

  • What sentence could Genaro García Luna face?

During 15 days of hearings, the jury heard the testimony of 27 witnesses, 26 from the prosecution, 9 of them cooperating, and one from the defense, García Luna's wife, Linda Cristina Pereyra.

As the jury left the courtroom, Garcia Luna, as he always does, raised his hands to his chest to greet his wife and daughter, Luna Garcia, who were there.

Pereyra, his wife, told CNN that she is not nervous or worried because for three years she "has faith."

During the hearing, Pereyra had in his hands a small panda bear that he sometimes squeezed.

García Luna faces several counts of participation in an ongoing criminal enterprise and conspiracy to obtain, import and distribute thousands of kilograms of cocaine in the United States, in addition to allegedly making false statements to US immigration officials.

The former official has pleaded not guilty to all charges.
