Today, a 5.9-magnitude earthquake hit the Lake Baikal basin in southern Siberia, Russia.
“The earthquake occurred in the waters of Lake Baikal, 18 kilometers from the village of Bolshoy Goloostnoye,” Novosti news agency quoted the Emergency Management Department in Irkutsk Province as saying, noting that its magnitude, which was recorded in Irkutsk, amounted to 3 degrees, and no injuries or damage were recorded.
Lake Baikal, located in southern Siberia, is the world's deepest freshwater lake, with a depth of 1,642 metres, and contains the largest amount of surface fresh water in the world.
