The Hindenburg Bridge in Hallbergmoos is now being demolished.

However, the historic building does not disappear completely from the townscape.

Hallbergmoos

– The Hallbergmoos municipal council has confirmed its decision to demolish the Hindenburg Bridge on the south-eastern edge of the municipal area and to replace it with a new structure.

However, a citizen's request to keep the bridge was unanimously rejected.

Because experts, including TÜV Süd, have been complaining about the poor condition and the poor load-bearing capacity and stability of the building at the end of Garchinger Weg since 2008, the municipal council decided in July 2022 to demolish and build a new building as the most economical solution.

The two applicants, Günther Frombeck and Georg Förg, now demanded receipt.

Once built by 200 Russian POWs

In their application, they refer to the historical significance: the Hindenburg Bridge was built in 1916 by around 200 Russian prisoners of war under the supervision of three citizens of Hallbergmoos and Goldach.

It is therefore a building of contemporary history.

The receipt should therefore not be dependent on financial aspects.

Her suggestion: put the bridge under monument protection, renovate it and set it up as a crossing for pedestrians and cyclists.

A new, stable bridge could be built to the side for motorized traffic.

(By the way: everything from the region is now also available in our regular Freising newsletter.)

"We didn't take the decision lightly and discussed the application of two valued citizens with the parliamentary groups up and down," emphasized Mayor Josef Niedermair (CSU) at the most recent meeting.

However, according to Niedermair, there are many reasons that speak against it: The history of the bridge is “not a creditable one”, at best it can be viewed as a memorial, according to Niedermair.

The building authority puts the costs for maintenance and renovation at at least 215,000 euros.

For the construction of a second bridge in the landscape protection area "Mooslandschaft", according to the head of the town hall, an estimated 800,000 to one million euros would be added.

The work planned for 2024 would be postponed until 2025.

In this case, it cannot be ruled out that the existing bridge would have to be completely closed to traffic due to its dilapidated condition.

"Bridge must remain usable"

A circumstance that the agriculture consultant Markus Loibl (Einigkeit) did not approve of.

Because the bridge is mainly used by agricultural traffic and, according to Loibl, must continue to be usable.

"You have to see if it's still proportionate," emphasized Josef Niedermair.

He added: "It might be different if the bridge were in town.

But many don't even know where it stands."

The municipal council unanimously agreed on a compromise proposal that the SPD councilor Christiane Oldenburg-Balden submitted to the committee: parts of the bridge railings are to be preserved and set up at a suitable location in Hallbergmoos - with a reference to their history.

At the meeting, Tanja Knieler (CSU) advocated “proper documentation” and the involvement of the bereaved.

A request that Andrea Holzmann (CSU) described as "difficult": It should not be easy to find the descendants of the 200 Russian prisoners of war.
