6 reasons to understand the current success of Les Luthiers on Corrientes street, even without their old hits

2023-02-18T21:30:26.654Z

A month after its premiere in Buenos Aires, the show 'Más tropiezos de Mastropiero' sells out tickets and confirms the validity of the group, currently with only two original members.

Mastropiezos by Mastropiero

, the new work by Les Luthiers and

their first show with original material in more than 14 years

, premiered in December in the city of Rosario, as usual for them.

Shortly after, at the beginning of January and a few days before arriving at the Teatro Opera de Buenos Aires,

the legendary humorous-musical ensemble announced its final farewell to the stage

, after 55 years of successful career.

Les Luthiers in full "More Mastropiero Stumbles": Horacio "Tato" Turano, Martín O'Connor, Carlos López Puccio, Tomás Mayer-Wolf, Jorge Maronna and Roberto Antier.

Since then, Les Luthiers

has not stopped filling the theater and reaching the top of the theatrical box office rankings

.

And not only are their old fans over the age of 40-60 (those who lived through their boom of the '70s and '80s in real time), but groups of twenty-somethings and thirty-somethings who don't stop laughing and celebrating the jokes and funny situations of the show.

It should be noted that there are currently

only two original members: Carlos López Puccio and Jorge Maronna

.

Four "new" actors, singers and musicians are added (actually not so much because they entered between 2000 and 2019): Roberto Antier, Tomás Mayer-Wolf, Martín O'Connor and Horacio "Tato" Turano.

And just in case there are two alternatives: Santiago Otero Ramos and Pablo Rabinovich.

But, what is the secret of such validity and popularity?

There are several factors that can explain it:

1-A simple and effective structure

A scene from the first performance of Les Luthiers at the Fundacion Astengo, in Rosario.

This new show by Les Luthiers revolves around a report on Johann Sebastian Mastropiero himself, the fictitious composer who has been mentioned as the author of their songs since its inception.

He had never been presented on stage before.

The format is a television program of cultural reports, where Roberto Antier interviews Martín O'Connor, who plays Mastropiero.

Thus, with the simple format of two armchairs, a small table and a background decoration.

there is

a series of hilarious questions and answers with permanent puns

.

Always with the still effective naif humor, naive and suitable for all audiences.

2-Short and forceful songs

The moment of tango "Sadness that saddens", with Horacio "Tato" Turano, Tomás Mayer-Wolf and Jorge Maronna, in "Más tripezos de Mastropiero" by Les Luthiers.

Every once in a while, the talk leads to a song, and they quickly leave the scene and the rest of the cast appears.

They sing

Christmas carols Opus 23-12

and make jokes about the Church, they border on the wrong line by making fun of inclusive language (

Days of Doris

), there is a bolero sung by Maronna (

Ella me engañó

), a tango performed by Turano (

Sadness that saddens

), a funeral march (

Priceless score

), a complaint against drugs (

Arriba los cartels

), a criticism of corrupt politicians and thieves (

Vote a Ortega

), a chachachá, and more.

They are short and forceful themes, the first accompanied by traditional instruments and later

with more and more unusual inventions that have always been their hallmark.

3-A solid cast

The members of Les Luthiers make up, as they are famous for,

a cast of millimeter precision

.

Every sentence, pause and punchline is clearly rehearsed to the limit of the obsessive.

Each song is impeccably executed, both instrumentally and vocally.

And as the show progresses it becomes clear that the "new" members have a musical formation on a par with their predecessors.

4-Roberto Antier

Much of

Mas Tropiezos by Mastropiero

is sustained by the

impeccable and superb performance of Roberto Antier

, who not only appeals to the spirit of the well-remembered Marcos Mundstock but also adds his own tones and gestures.

In his role as the interviewer for the television program

Diálogos con la cultura

, Antier sets the pace and must enunciate the greatest number of speeches, without failing in any passage and conquering the public that may not have seen it before.

5-New and old instruments

New and old homemade musical instruments appear in the shows "More mishaps by Mastropiero", by Les Luthiers.

From a piston organ to a gigantic rubber band that gives air to multiple melodicas, Les Luthiers presents a mix of new and old instruments of his own creation (the oldest made together with Carlos Iraldi).

Some are as small as a violin made from a can of quince jelly or huge devices.

They all sound in tune, work perfectly and cause laughter for the unusual

.

6-A luxury bonus-track

Without spoiling, it only remains to say that as a bonus-track there is a walk along the boulevard of memories.

A perfect ending.
