The appearance of a massive hammerhead shark was an unusual treat for
32 travelers
on a tour boat in the
Bahamas
this week, but then something even stranger and more shocking happened: a dog dove off a nearby pier to confront the savage sea beast.
In a video circulating on
social networks
, tourists who took the four-hour excursion can be heard screaming and begging the dog to get out of the water, with shouts such as "Oh my God!", "Get out of
there, baby !”
and "Stop chasing him!"
The dog ignored them and headed for the
12-foot shark
, which was writhing as the two animals circled and the dog tried to bite it in turquoise waters near a private island in the southern Bahamas.
The shark then
slowly swam away
, much to the delight and surprise of the crowd.

“I don't think the shark will mess with him!” one man exclaimed.
The shark had emerged from under the boat during a tour Wednesday in the southern Bahamas organized by
Exuma Water Sports.
The company's reservations manager,
Rebecca Lightbourn
, explained to the Associated Press on Friday that the black and brown dog always runs along the shore to bark at the ship when it passes that island.
She said it's the
first time she's seen him jump into the water.

"I guess this time the dog decided he wanted to protect his home and face a very large fish in the water,
so he gave chase
," Lightbourn added.
As the shark swam away from the dock, the medium-sized dog scrambled back up the rocks and away,
to applause from tourists.
The boat then headed to a popular area where tourists jump into the water with the famous Bahamian swimming pigs.
The swimming pigs are one of the great attractions of the Bahamas.
