Alone with Paul Rudd: 'What do I know about Argentina? That you produced the best footballers in history'

2023-02-18T11:48:17.227Z

The actor from 'Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania' (and from 'Friends') also tells unmissable anecdotes from the shoot.

Having a 10-minute interview with

Paul Rudd

, in these remote Zoom times, is practically a luxury.

The comedian, who appeared in the series

Friends

-yes, it was Mike Hannigan, who married Phoebe Buffay, the role of Lisa Kudrow- and in

No Idea

and

Virgin at 40

is, since 2015, Scott Lang.

Or Ant-Man, the Marvel character.

The interview with

Clarín

is a few days after the premiere of

Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania

, the third in the saga, which in the preview functions on Wednesday and on Thursday, the day of its premiere, led to no less than 117,369 viewers.

It is expected to end the weekend, in the United States and Canada, at around US$100 million.

Born on April 6, 1969, in New Jersey, Paul had not starred in any action-adventure films until the first

Ant-Man

.

A net comedian, he had allowed himself a few appearances in dramas, such as the Oscar nominee

The Rules of Life

, alongside Tobey Maguire, Charlize Theron and Michael Caine.

But his thing is comedy, and the entire interview with

Clarín

will be in an eternal joyful tone.

The interview

I'm looking over your shoulder.

Is it a collection of EC Comics?

Is that what it is?

-Perhaps perhaps….

-No DC, EC… EC, EC, yes, not DC Comics… Like

Tales from the Crypt

.

hero and villain.

Paul Rudd, together with Jonathan Majors (we'll see him soon in "Creed III") in a scene from "Ant-Man...Quantumania".

Disney photos

-Yeah, not DC Comics…

Oh, but that's okay, I don't have a problem with that.

I like all comics.

But I was wondering, those red books, they look like the ones I have, the old EC comics, which are really cool, right?

Ha ha ha.

Sorry, let's move on.

- Do you have any relationship, or what do you know about our country, our culture?

-I know that you are the soccer world champions.

That final was the most exciting soccer game, sorry soccer game, I've ever seen.

And I had a friend from Argentina growing up and he talked about it a lot.

I have never been to your country.

I would love to visit it.

Messi with the Cup. "That final was the most exciting soccer match, I'm sorry, soccer match, that I've seen," Paul told Clarín.

But I think if you ask most Americans what they think of Argentina, they probably think of soccer.

I mean, you guys really produced the best footballers ever.

So…

-Well, anyway...

-I know there is much more to your country than that, but right now… (laughs).

"Scott's probably got a little ego hurt because, you know, he may never really get mentioned among the great heroes," Rudd believes.

-Don't worry… Now, here in Argentina, we are going to start a campaign in your favor, because how do you feel about Ant-Man not being so recognized by Marvel fans as the true savior of everything?

-Yes I think so.

Well, thanks, first of all, for bringing him into the discussion… I think it's funny and appropriate, but I don't think I'll ever feel comfortable on the front lines of battle.

I never want to be, and I think this is true of Scott Lang, as the guy who's running the show.

But I also think that Scott probably has a little bit of a ego hurt because, you know, he may never really get mentioned among the greats.

However, he's the guy who in this movie has written a book about Thanos and the events of

Endgame

, and he talks about his involvement in all of that.

And so, there's probably a part of him that's a little hurt, and maybe he wants to do a victory turn like a hero, like an Avenger.

With the cast of "Friends", Paul is the penultimate, next to Lisa Kudrow, his wife in the fiction of the series.

But I also think that, at its core, who he really is, is someone who identifies as a father, considers himself a father," he remarks, even more than he considers himself a superhero, because he's always had a bit of relationship between love and self-hate.

-Don't you think that Ant-Man should be the next leader of the Avengers, like Iron Man was?

-Don't know.

I mean, this is the kind of thing I have no say in.

I know Ant-Man's role in

The Avengers

and in the story, the story of him in the comics is pretty substantial.

But I feel, even now, when I look at all of this, the kind of new superheroes that are coming out and these little kids, that I feel like the elder statesman, the kind that's ready to sit down like the proud parent and watch them save the world from many more ways.

Scott (Paul Redd), giant, in the Quantum Realm.

Do you remember how the project of the first “Ant-Man” came to you?

-Yes Yes.

There was a director named Edgar Wright, who you probably know (he's the director of

Baby Driver

and

The Soho Mystery

, with Anya Taylor-Joy), who had originally just written a script and was going to direct

Ant-Man

.

Edgar is a friend of mine, and he had been a friend of mine before I knew anything about Marvel.

And he was the one who offered me the part.

So, I wouldn't be here if it wasn't for Edgar.

And I was excited, plus the idea of working with him, and he ultimately left the project.

But obviously I stayed and have worked with Marvel and Ant-Man for many years.

It's that I was very excited.

I was excited that I was going to try a genre I had never worked in before, but it wasn't something like this.

I mean, even when we started Marvel, while it was successful, it hadn't built up to what it is now.

I know I don't know if I would have anticipated almost ten years after sitting here talking to you about the third installment of Ant-Man.

The Argentine Victoria Alonso, producer of Marvel and of "Argentina, 1985", asked Rudd if he had seen her...

-Do you have a deal, do you have conversations with Victoria Alonso, executive president of production at Marvel?

-Oh, yes, yes, sure.

And now she's also nominated for an Oscar, I mean, it's very, very exciting.

Yes, Victoria is great.

-Did you see “Argentina, 1985”?

-I have not seen her yet.

I had a feeling you were going to ask me this question.

I even saw Victoria last night, and I said, “Congratulations.

I'm so happy for you."

The first thing she said to me was: “Have you seen

Argentina, 1985

?”

I told him “Not yet.

I really will.

I promise to go see her this week.”

So maybe after she sees it, you and I can have a talk.

What do you think of the movie?

Do you like it?

"I promise to go see it this week," Paul Rudd said of the Argentine film nominated for an Oscar.

Photo File Clarín

-Yeah.

Yes, I like it a lot.

It is a very good film.

Yes, that's what I heard, yes.

-You will like.

And how do you feel about inaugurating Phase 5 of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, being the protagonist of this film?

-How do I feel about it?

I'm excited, there's a nice feeling, especially since it's the third movie where we've been given this location to start Phase 5, to introduce Kang the Conqueror.

He feels like he's bigger than the first two.

And that's exciting.

Paul Rudd, with the actresses who play his daughter and her partner, Kathryn Newton and Evangeline Lilly.

I mean, that was a really nice thing.

I know that Peyton Reed (the director) has said in the past that he didn't want to be a "palate cleanser," that the first two Ant-Man movies came out right after the giant Avengers movies, and our movies have been smaller.

And they existed, you know, right next to the MCU, even though they were part of the whole thing.

And that he wanted to do the next big, bold Marvel movie.

And that's what it feels like.

So it's great to be able to do this.

-And will there be a fourth “Ant-Man” movie?

Are you already in conversations?

-That's something so... No, they haven't said anything, and I don't think they will say anything.

But they never say anything.

I have no idea, and you know, I'm probably not the guy to ask, you might have to go straight to Kevin (Marvel president Feige).

I think maybe they don't know either, you know?

Jonathan Majors (Kang the Conqueror) jokes with Paul Rudd at the UK premiere.

-Maybe maybe.

Tell us, please, what happened on filming, in a scene that was impossible to shoot because of the bad smell, the smell of manure.

-(Laughs).

Yes. Yes, there was.

There was a studio… They try to do this, you know, we're shooting in the Quantum Realm, and it's hard, because it's a very strange environment and it's going to be finished with visual effects, but they want to do certain things, make it feel as much as it feels can and have as many practical things as possible.

And so we were shooting in a studio, they brought in a lot of dirt, and they must have come to an agreement on the land, because it wasn't all just dirt… And when we would go there to shoot, throughout the whole day it became so overwhelming the smell …And then it got hot and it started to smell worse.

"Scott considers himself a father," he remarks, "even more than he considers himself a superhero."

And I think by the end of the week, it became clear that there was no way we could film there.

This is too horrendous.

And so they had to get rid of that and bring in a whole new load of dirt.

There was a lot of smell.

So that was not an easy task.

-My last question, I read some strange statements from you, in which you assured that your secret to staying young is simply sleeping.

Could you please expand on this topic?

-Yeah.

Well, first of all, I never said that, but what happens is I give an interview, and then people take something and put a headline and then a domino effect starts.

The only thing I said about sleeping, and this is true, I think he was talking about the training we have to go through to prepare for Marvel roles…

And me, when I'm doing

Ant-Man

, I'm lifting weights with a trainer, I'm eating really well, I'm doing a lot of cardio.

And I'm saying that for proper training, there are a lot of components, there are really four big components that you need to focus on.

And I think the most important one, the one that people seem to forget or not care about at all, is sleep.

You have to sleep well.

Your body needs time to repair itself, if you've been doing a lot of weight training, and there are people who will set their alarm to wake up so they can get up for cardio before doing anything, and you're defeating the purpose.

So I said the most important aspect of this that people need to remember is sleep.

But it had nothing to do with my own regimen or the secrets of anything.

Have you seen

Argentina, 1985

?

Perhaps, the nerves for the debut of his new film did not leave him time.

Surely Victoria Alonso will ask you again.
