Shifting gears: the government continues to promote the legal revolution - and the resistance continues - voila! news

The protest against the government's plan to weaken the justice system reached its peak last week, but so far no breakthrough has been achieved that would lead to talks between the government and those opposed to its measures. On Monday, the organizers of the protest plan to strike again, and on the other hand, the government is not deterred and insists on continuing to promote the legislation "without a break"

The protest against the revolution in the judicial system will continue in the coming week as well, and will spread over a series of demonstrations across the country.

Tonight (Saturday) the demonstration is expected in Tel Aviv, as usual on Shabbat evenings, and on Monday the protestors against the revolution will sit down again and will come to a large demonstration in front of the Knesset building in Jerusalem.

On the other hand, the government does not intend to stop the advancement of the reform legislation, and as Justice Minister Yariv Levin and Constitution Committee Chairman Simcha Rothman clarified this week, it will continue "without a break". This, despite President Yitzhak Herzog's request last Sunday to freeze the legislation until the coalition talks and the opposition.

The protest continues.

The leaders of the struggle declared this coming Monday as the "Day of National Struggle".

In a statement they gave on Thursday at Beit Sokolov in Tel Aviv, they detailed the steps they would take, and said that next week marches in various cities, business shutdowns and a demonstration in Jerusalem in front of the Knesset are planned.

"The general public is called upon to mobilize for the effort," they read.

"This coming Monday, the Knesset will bring the Basic Law of the Dictatorship to a vote," they said in a statement.

"This is probably the most dangerous law among the legislation that is brought forward. If the law is brought to a vote and passes - negotiations will be clearly illegitimate. This is a point where at any stage the coalition can pass the legislation."

Discussion in the Constitution Committee (Photo: Flash 90, Yonatan Zindel)

On Wednesday, opposition leader Yair Lapid demanded from the coalition to halt the promotion of the legal revolution for 60 days to allow President Yitzhak Herzog to establish a presidential committee. Lapid spoke with President Herzog before the speech

. On the table is what a proper procedure looks like.

What does a presidential committee mean, how is it supposed to work," said Lapid in a speech in the Knesset plenum. "We have waited 74 years, nothing will happen if it takes a few more weeks, thanks to which we will save the people of Israel from a terrible crisis." That day, the chairman of the Constitution Committee decided

, MK Simcha Rothman, to withdraw the proposals for the enhancement clause law, "Deri Law 2" and the Mash Law, which were supposed to come up for a vote in a preliminary reading in the Knesset plenum.

According to Rothman and Levin, the removal of the proposals from the agenda does not concern the negotiation attempts, because these laws are not related to the legal reform, and that the promotion of the reform legislation will continue "uninterrupted".

The revolution planned by the government includes a series of significant changes in the legal system, such as a determination that only an expanded composition of the High Court of Justice can invalidate legislation passed by the Knesset. Another step of the revolution, designed to strengthen the government's hand vis-à-vis the court, is the establishment of a superseding clause that will nullify decisions of the High Court by a majority of only 61 members of the Knesset, as well as changing the composition of the committee for the selection of judges so that it is fully controlled by the coalition.

The reform also deals with weakening the power of the legal advisors to the government, so that their position will not bind the government, and with eliminating the reason for reasonableness, which, among other things, significantly limits the court's ability to intervene in the appointment of senior officials.
