Survey: Half of the students surveyed believe that starting a business requires $200,000

From January 3rd to February 10th this year, Haoyang Junior Chamber of Commerce collected a total of 306 valid questionnaires from students aged 18 to 25 in Hong Kong’s tertiary institutions through on-site interviews and online forms.

The survey found that only 33% of the respondents would choose to start a business in the future, while 46% would choose to be "wage earners". Among them, 54% expect their first job to earn 12,000 to 20,000 yuan a month.

There are two main reasons for students’ reluctance to start a business. 33% think that the biggest challenge is the start-up capital, and half of them expect to need 200,000 yuan. Another 38% think technology and technology are the challenges.

Nearly half believe networking is the most important business skill

As the saying goes, “Knowing people is better than literacy”. Among the respondents who chose to start a business, 45% believed that networking is the most important business skill. As for their most promising businesses are medical care, Metaverse and elderly services, Accounted for 23%, 21% and 15% respectively.

Respondents also believed that Hong Kong’s business environment scored only 6.5 points (out of 10 points), among which the highest rating was 6.27 for the rule of law and low tax rates, followed by 6.21 for public security laws and regulations, and the lowest for 5.44 for non-intervention policies.

Chambers call on government to provide more start-up funding to youth

Ma Guojian, president of Haoyang Youth Chamber of Commerce, suggested that the government can provide more entrepreneurial funds for young people, and can also cooperate with technology companies to provide support.
