The 15th Andechs winter beer season comes to an end at Josefi in March.

The dark and light “snack beer” has long had its fan community.

Andechs

– When Andechs Abbey celebrated its 550th anniversary in 2005, its brew was prepared for the first time: that of winter beer.

It was an anniversary beer, bottled at the time and sold in packs of six.

Shortly afterwards, when brewery boss Alexander Reiss, Bräustüberl host Josef Eckl and Frater Leonhard sat together and drank from the spicy dark beer, the idea was born to produce this drink exclusively for the monastery - unfiltered in its original form.

The regular guests of the Bräustüberl have appreciated this for 15 years now, because this winter beer has been offered for 15 years.

Always between Martini (November 11) and Josefi, which is actually celebrated on March 19.

Not this year, but more on that later.

The winter beer is a beer like the brewers used to squeeze it out of the tanks (drapped directly via a small tap) and put it in hot water to warm up in the cool storage cellars - unfiltered.

It is brewed exclusively for the Bräustüberl and pumped from the brewery up to the tavern via the in-house line.

"That's the only way it's possible," explains Reiss.

“The cold chain must not be interrupted with the unfiltered beer.

We can only guarantee that here.” That is why the winter beer is not available in bottles or in barrels, but only at the bar on top of the Holy Mountain.

"A beautiful story of how the brewery and the Bräustüberl work hand in hand," says monastery spokesman Martin Glaab.

Reiss emphasizes the "house taste" that the winter beer develops.

Because all minerals and protein substances remain in the beer and are not filtered out, this special note is created.

"Anything you can't get out has a taste - simple as that," he explains.

It's not that easy to hit that note every time.

There is a lot of experience in using the right malt and the right hops.

"Malts are different, even with hops the bitter units are different depending on the harvest," says Reiss as a matter of course.

However, Glaab emphasizes the wealth of experience of Reiss and his brewing team.

"It's like juggling balls of different sizes.

It's high art," says the monastery spokesman.

And he knows that the committed regular audience can taste every nuance.

"There are real fan groups on social media," says Glaab.

People who meet to go on a winter beer hike to Andechs.

Many were really looking forward to the Martini.

Customers that Reiss doesn't see all year round would also come to Andechs in November to try the new winter beer, when it will be served again just in time for the church's pre-Lent period.

“Even as far as Düsseldorf,” says Reiss with a laugh.

The winter beer is just one of four popular seasonal beers in the cold season.

Of course, the bock beers are also part of it, the wheat bock and the double bock, which is just as dark and spicy as the winter beer.

The dark buck is sweeter and should therefore be enjoyed with more caution – at almost seven percent it has a higher alcohol content.

The winter beer has a little more than four percent.

This is another reason why it is valued as the ideal snack beer.

The 15th winter beer season is coming to an end.

It will be served until March 18th.

Now the reader may ask why until March 18th, when Josefi is on March 19th.

But if not on the Holy Mountain, where else are church traditions observed?

And these state that when a saint's day and a Sunday coincide, the saint must depart.

That's why Josefi is already taking place in Andechs on Saturday, March 18th.

This is also important for many Bräustüberl visitors to know, as on this day people with a proven name of Josef or Josefa get half a beer free of charge.

And until November, for the time being, a winter beer for the last time, if desired.
