The carnival Sunday with great fun and colorful hustle and bustle in the old town of Schongau is just around the corner, and then that: two popular party locations remain closed.

Schongau - Once a year in the old town of Schongau it's time to "raise your cups" and celebrate as much as you can.

The colorful carnival hustle and bustle after the big parade in the old town of Schongau is probably the biggest party of the year.

Especially since the maskers are likely to be even more hungry for celebrations after the forced Corona break than before.

But there is a drop of bitterness in the fools' paper cups with sparkling wine: both the Café Müller - after the carnival parade one of the places to go for the party afterwards - and the Bistro Gleich will be closed on Carnival Sunday.

And for quite different reasons.

Carnival parties got out of hand: "If the damage is more than the benefit, then you just don't want more"

The past few years have simply not been nice, explains Gabi Kilian.

After the carnival parade, the landlady of Café Müller on Kirchenstraße in the old town had open doors for the party people on no fewer than twelve Sundays during carnival.

But the parties kept getting wilder.

"If the damage is more than the benefit, then you just don't want more," she suggests.

It would have taken her and the family days to put the café back in order, to clean it and to renovate it.

(By the way: everything from the region is now also available in our regular Schongau newsletter.)

One can well remember: the shards, over which the guests often danced late at night, would have given a fakir real pleasure.

With a deposit of one euro, the damage that was caused every year was far from being covered.

"We don't need that anymore," says Kilian.

Café stays closed on Shrove Sunday – landlady is sorry “for the people who were always nice”

So do people need to think more about what good manners is?

“On Shrove Sunday, no one is in control.

You see the most well-behaved people who no longer know how to behave on Shrove Sunday.” A sad experience that was not only made by the landlady herself.

Her son-in-law - by the way, a soul of man - helped her as security at the entrance area at the last carnival Sunday parties.

A thankless job, to say the least.

"My son-in-law was approached because it was too crowded inside and he just couldn't let anyone in.

There's no fun there." The consequence of all this is that Café Müller is closed on Shrove Sunday.

Landlady Gabi Kilian regrets the end of a well-loved tradition after so many years.

“But people no longer know each other at carnival, they no longer know any borders.

Although I feel sorry for the people who have always been nice.”

Not enough staff - the bistro does not open on Shrove Sunday

Georg Gleich from the bistro of the same name on the Weinstrasse in Schongau's old town, it's clear that the decision isn't easy for him.

But it doesn't help: Even the Bistro Gleich will not be the usual contact point for the carnival party people on carnival Sunday.

However, the fact that the doors remain closed is not due to pent-up frustration from previous years.

On the contrary, he always liked to do Shrove Sunday.

Alone: As is currently the case with many restaurateurs, there is a lack of staff.

"And you need quite a few people for the carnival Sunday, otherwise it can't be done," he says and hopes "that we can do it again next year on carnival Sunday".

Carnival parade and old town party in Schongau on Sunday

So the visitors of the Schongau carnival parade and the old town party for the carnival Sunday can only hope that it will still be wet and happy.

But don't let it get too humid from above, so that you can celebrate outside for as long as possible at the stands set up on Marienplatz.

The Bistro Valentin also opens on Shrove Sunday.

The hosts say goodbye with a last big party there.
