Residents and municipal employees of Lod are demonstrating today (Sunday) outside the government meeting in Jerusalem, protesting the wave of violence in the city that claimed the lives of five people in the last ten days.

"Enough, the time has come for them to take Lod seriously, we came to Jerusalem to raise a cry - because the problem of Lod today will be the problem of Tel Aviv, Rishon Lezion, Tiberias and Be'er Sheva tomorrow," said the Mayor of Lod, Yair Rabivo.

He demands that the government urgently advance the governance reform legislation and deploy 500 police officers in the city on a regular basis.

In addition to this, he demands that the handling of crime in Lod be transferred to Lehav 433, to Yabal, and to the Shin Bet along with a government decision to strengthen the city and its residents.

As a sign of solidarity with the demonstration, Lod City Hall remains closed this morning and service will not be provided in its offices.

"This time we will not stop with the protest until the government helps us. The protest is the beginning, if we have to we will shut down transportation in the heart of Israel," said the mayor.

"For the first time, this is a joint protest of all the populations in Lod - Jews and Arabs together. I trust the Prime Minister and his ministers to hear our cry and reach out to restore a sense of security to Lod."

Jamal Abu Siam, a member of the Lod city council, said "In two words? We are fed up. Almost every weekend there is another murder incident in the city. We just want to take care of our residents to live in peace and feel that no one remembers us."
