The Speaker of the People's Assembly, Hamouda Sabbagh, met today in the parliament's building with a delegation from the Lebanese Parliament headed by Ali Hassan Khalil, head of the Lebanese-Syrian Parliamentary Brotherhood and Friendship Committee, who is visiting Damascus to offer condolences to the People's Assembly and the government and people of Syria, after the catastrophe of the earthquake that it was exposed to.

During the meeting, Sabbagh stressed that the Syrian and Lebanese peoples are one people in two countries bound by the unity of blood and a common destiny, and together they were exposed to the same series of wars and attacks, stressing that the deep-rooted relations between the two countries and the two brotherly peoples are too great to be spoiled by the conspiracies and plans of the forces of conspiracy, tyranny and global arrogance.

Sabbagh pointed out the importance of such visits in continuing to consolidate parliamentary relations, exchanging experiences, activating the work of the Parliamentary Fraternity Committee, and adopting parliamentary diplomacy to open broader horizons in all fields, in addition to working to raise the level of coordination between the two houses in regional and international conferences for the benefit of the two councils. Sabbagh thanked the Lebanese Parliament and the Lebanese people for their stance in support of Syria, their fraternal and humanitarian participation, and their offering of help and assistance with all available human and material capabilities to their Syrian brothers who were affected by the catastrophe of the devastating earthquake that struck a number of Syrian governorates at dawn on the sixth of February.

Sabbagh also appreciated the Lebanese people's standing by their Syrian brothers and the Syrian Arab Army in the war on terrorism, and the sacrifices they made in order to defend Syria and Lebanon, stressing the continuation and advancement of this honorable march under the leadership of President Bashar al-Assad.

For his part, Khalil expressed, in his own name and on behalf of the delegation and the Lebanese Parliament, his full solidarity with Syria and its people, as a result of the catastrophe of the devastating earthquake that befell it. “Israel” the Lebanese airspace as a springboard for its attacks on Syria.

With regard to the role of relations between the parliaments of the two countries, and the fraternity committees, Khalil said: “We in Parliament are ready to increase the level of relations and cooperation with the Syrian side to the fullest extent, especially in international and regional parliamentary forums.”

In their turn, the members of the Lebanese delegation expressed their deep condolences and full solidarity with Syria and its people, indicating that the activation of the fraternity committees has a positive impact on the Syrians and the Lebanese, calling for more periodic parliamentary meetings to serve the common interests.

For their part, members of the People's Assembly office and members of the Syrian-Lebanese Parliamentary Fraternity Committee in the parliament stressed the need to develop relations between the parliamentarians of the two countries, stressing that the artificial borders separating them from each other will not separate their two brotherly peoples, because what unites the relations between the two countries is much greater than the things that may divide. between them.

In a statement to reporters after the meeting, the head of the Lebanese delegation stated that this meeting is an opportunity to express the depth of solidarity of the Lebanese people of all categories and affiliations with their Syrian brothers and stand by them, stressing their keenness and determination to expand the scope of relations between the two countries at all levels, “parliamentary, governmental and popular,” and ready The House of Representatives and the Brotherhood and Friendship Committee to play all possible roles in order to help lift the unjust siege imposed on Syria and its people, which was not broken as it should be by many countries after the disaster of the earthquake.

Khalil said, "We aspire to raise relations to a level that secures the interests of the two brotherly countries, and in a way that bypasses the unjust laws against Syria, specifically the repercussions of the Caesar Act, which affects not only Syria but also Lebanon."

The meeting was attended by members of the Council's bureau, the head and members of the Syrian-Lebanese Parliamentary Fraternity Committee in the Council, a number of members of the People's Assembly, and Ali Abdul Karim Ali, the former Syrian ambassador to Lebanon.

The Lebanese delegation includes Representatives Tony Franjieh, Ghazi Zaiter, Qassem Hashem, Jihad al-Samad, Ibrahim al-Moussawi, Hagop Pakradounian and Samer al-Tom.
