After the severe earthquake in north-west Syria, there were air strikes in the country for the first time.

Several people have been killed in apparently Israeli attacks on the capital Damascus.

Syrian state media report five dead and 15 injured.

The pro-opposition Syrian Observatory for Human Rights speaks of 15 dead, including civilians.

According to this, a building was destroyed in the attack in the Kafr Susa district.

A large part of the Syrian security apparatus is housed in the district.

The Syrian state news agency Sana distributed images of an almost completely destroyed house, parts of which are falling onto the street.

As a result, several buildings were damaged.

According to the observatory, which is close to the opposition, the impact occurred near an Iranian cultural center, and the rockets were aimed at locations of “Iranian militias and the Lebanese Hezbollah”.

The head of the UK-based organization, Rami Abdel Rahman, spoke of the "deadliest Israeli attack in the Syrian capital."

Israel's fight against Hezbollah

Israel has carried out hundreds of airstrikes in areas controlled by the Syrian government in recent years.

However, residential areas in the capital are rarely hit.

The Israeli government rarely comments on the matter, but has repeatedly stressed that it will not allow Iran to extend its influence to Israel's borders.

The Syrian government of ruler Bashar al-Assad is supported militarily by Iran and Hezbollah.

The attacks on Sunday night were the first since the devastating earthquake that shook Syria and Turkey on February 6.

The situation was and is particularly precarious in the rebel-controlled region of Idlib in north-west Syria.

Damascus is in the southwest.
