The 73rd Berlinale got off to a very political start.
From the opening ceremony, Thursday, February 16, and the now ritual intervention of Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky by videoconference (after the Cannes Film Festival and the Venice Film Festival), the organizers expressed their support for Ukraine in the face of the Russian invasion, the revolt in Iran and the victims of the earthquake which hit Turkey and Syria.
The next day, Hollywood star Sean Penn shone the spotlight on him with
Superpower
, a confused and narcissistic two-hour documentary in tribute to Volodymyr Zelensky and the Ukrainian people.
But a completely different music is playing in the competition for the golden bear.
And halfway through, most feature films seem mostly obsessed with one theme: masculinity.
Countries change, tone and form vary, but so far the Berlinale has watched men fall, stumble or fail with beautiful consistency and random success.
