At least 36 people have been killed in floods and landslides caused by torrential rains in the southeastern Brazilian state of Sao Paulo.
"Unfortunately we will have more deaths," state civil defense chief Henguel Pereira told Folha de Sao Paulo newspaper, according to Agence France-Presse, while Tarcisio de Freitas, governor of Sao Paulo state, declared a state of emergency in five cities along the coast.
Footage from the town of Sao Sebastiao showed entire neighborhoods flooded, house wreckage swept away, submerged highways and cars destroyed by fallen trees. The authorities did not give a figure on the number of missing.
