Heavy rains hit the coastal areas of southeastern Brazil, causing floods and landslides that killed dozens and left hundreds more homeless.
The rains hit the northern state of Sao Paulo on Sunday.
Two of the hardest hit cities, São Sebastião and Bratioga, canceled their carnival celebrations.
Teresio de Freitas, the governor of the state of Sao Paulo, declared a state of emergency in five cities along the coast.

At least 36 people have died as a result of the floods so far, Sao Paulo state authorities said in a statement.
The floods left more than 200 people homeless, with another 338 evacuated in the coastal area north of the city of Sao Paulo, according to the state government.

Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva said he planned to visit the affected areas in Sao Paulo and described the events as a "tragedy".
