A marten family has let off steam in the Schönberger Wasserhaus - this now has to be renovated.

The full extent is not yet clear.

But it won't be cheap for the community.

Schönberg – Vitus Gansler is very proud of the Schönberger water.

"Look, really nice and clear.

You can see a cent falling all the way down there,” he says, looking into one of the four water tanks, each of which can hold 70 cubic meters of water.

From 2006 to 2008, the Schönbergers built the water house in which the tanks are located on their own.

For those who are now standing in the building, everything looks completely normal.

But there are problems with the walls.

The reason: martens.

"A whole family lives here," says Schönberger Gansler, who is Rottenbuch's deputy mayor.

For years attempts have been made to master the animals.

Live traps were set up, but it was never possible to expel all martens.

They never got into the building itself, but they tore through the insulation in the walls.

In order to see how large the affected area is, the wood paneling was removed in several places on a trial basis over the past year.

The result: the damage was much greater than assumed.

(By the way: everything from the region is now also available in our regular Schongau newsletter.)

Marten damage at the Schönberg water house: "The animals use the insulation as a habitat and toilet"

But the water house has to be insulated, the temperature in the building should only fluctuate slightly over the course of the year, says Gansler.

So far, the lack of insulation has had little effect.

"We were on time." The municipality of Rottenbuch commissioned the renovation of the building.

Georg Erhard, a local craftsman, takes over.

The first side of the water house has already been completed, work is currently underway on the second wall.

"It's not pleasant to clear out the material," admits Erhard.

"The animals use the insulation as a place to live and as a toilet," explains Gansler.

Hard fiber boards are now used on the walls, between which the insulation is inserted.

There should no longer be any gaps through which the animals can slip.

There is also a board coat on the outside.

"It's a huge effort," says Gansler.

"But it has to be."

Wasserhaus Schönberg has to be renovated: High costs for the municipality

It is currently unclear whether the roof also needs to be renovated.

"We still have to look into that," says Erhard.

The craftsmen want to get an impression of the situation with test holes.

Whether with or without roof renovation: It is already clear that the work will not be cheap.

According to Gansler, costs “in the five-digit range” should be incurred for the walls alone.

Something also needs to be done about the source

As Mayor Markus Bader reported in the Rottenbuch municipal council, not only does the water house in Schönberg have to be renovated, but also the spring from which the water for the residents gushes.

In recent years, the amount gained has "continuously decreased".

It is not about the fact that there is less water overall.

"There is enough there.

But less arrives in the collector.

So there is a technical reason.

And that has to be fixed," explained Bader.

According to Deputy Mayor Vitus Gansler, more than 200 liters of water per minute could be obtained in the past, but now it is around 130 to 140 liters.

It is very likely that roots have grown into the inflow over the years.

The facilities at the source were built in the 1960s.

The municipality wants to hire a specialist company to look for the cause of the problem.

It should start this year or next year.

"Because if things continue like this," said Bader, "there may be problems in a dry summer."
