Officials have issued winter weather watches from the west coast to northeast Michigan and include more than 14 million people.
Snowfall of 12 to 36 inches is possible in the Cascades and Rocky Mountains through Monday or so.
Some places in the northern and central plains of the country can get between 30 and 60 centimeters of snow later this week.
