PYONGANG — North Korea launched two ballistic missiles in the waters off the east coast of the Korean peninsula early Monday (February 20).

According to the Japanese Defense Ministry, both missiles were fired around 7 a.m. local time on Monday.

The first rocket flew about 400 kilometers at a maximum altitude of about 100 kilometers, the ministry said in a statement.

The second rocket was launched about 10 minutes later at an altitude of about 50 kilometers and flew about 350 kilometers.

North Korea confirmed Monday's shooting down, describing it as "an exercise involving a super-large multiple rocket launcher, which is a vehicle for a tactical nuclear attack."

According to KCNA, the country fired two 600mm multiple rocket launchers (MRL) - South Korea considers multiple rocket launchers larger than 600mm as ballistic missiles.

North Korea could be ready for more missile launches.

Should Pyongyang perceive the presence of US forces in the region as a threat, it will take "appropriate measures", it said.
