The chairman of religious Zionism, Finance Minister Bezalel Smutritz, refused to attend a meeting with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu this evening (Monday) with the participation of Defense Minister Yoav Galant and Chief of Staff Herzi Halevi, which was supposed to deal with the distribution of powers in the Ministry of Defense.
The Chief of Staff, like Gallant, opposes the transfer of powers stipulated in the coalition agreements and the meeting was supposed to deal with promoting a solution to the issue. According to sources in the Prime Minister's Office, Netanyahu met with Gallant and the Chief of Staff in Smotrich's absence.
Smotrich's decision not to attend the meeting was published for the first time in News 13.
Opposition leader Yair Lapid responded: "The Minister of Finance and the alternate Minister of Defense is not ready to attend a security meeting with the Prime Minister because the Chief of Staff is present in the room.
