The Preparatory Office of the International Mediation Institute held an inauguration ceremony in Hong Kong last Thursday (16th). Hong Kong was established, and preparatory work for the establishment of an international mediation institute began.

Indonesia, Pakistan, Laos, Cambodia, Serbia, Belarus, Sudan, Algeria, and Djibouti are all signatories to the Joint Statement.

The director of the preparatory office is Dr. Sun Jin.

Cheng Ruohua, former Secretary of Justice, said in an interview with China News Agency that the International Mediation Institute is a good supplement to the existing international dispute settlement mechanism and is not intended to replace anything. She believes that mediation emphasizes "peace is the most important thing" and hopes that both parties or multiple parties can tolerate it In common with China, we will find acceptable solutions and provide countries or companies facing disputes with one more channel to resolve disputes.

She believes that the establishment of an international mediation institute in Hong Kong demonstrates Hong Kong's unique advantages under the "one country, two systems", including Hong Kong's more internationalization, easier communication with different parties, and internationally recognized dispute resolution experience and a large number of legal talents.

She hoped that Hong Kong would give full play to the above-mentioned advantages and help negotiate relevant international conventions.

Return to Tsinghua University to coach

Zheng Ruohua also talked about the recent situation in the interview, saying that two months after resigning as the Secretary of Justice last year, she returned to teach at Tsinghua University in Beijing, as the director and professor of the International Arbitration and Dispute Resolution Project of Tsinghua University.

She pointed out that because of her expertise in arbitration and mediation, she had already opened a master's program in "International Arbitration and Dispute Resolution" at Tsinghua University in 2012.

However, during her tenure as the Secretary of Justice, she was unable to give lectures separately. After she left office, Tsinghua University immediately invited her again.

In January this year, she served as Co-Chairman and member of the Executive Committee of the Asian Academy of International Law.

She hopes that through promotion and research, the development of international law will be better, and she will continue to implement the goal through training and industry forums in the future.

She pointed out that she has resumed her practice as a senior counsel, an arbitrator, and a mediator. She also joked that she is also "a person who can't be idle. I will go there if there is a need for me."
